How much do sea tow jobs pay per hour?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Sea Tow position, and why are they important?
To thrive as a Sea Tow operator, you need strong boating and navigation skills, mechanical aptitude, and typically a valid captain’s license such as a USCG Merchant Mariner Credential. Familiarity with VHF marine radios, GPS systems, and towing equipment is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving abilities, professionalism, and calm communication are vital soft skills in this role. These skills ensure safe, efficient responses to on-water emergencies and exceptional customer service for boaters in need.
What types of situations does a Sea Tow operator typically respond to and what does a typical day look like?
Sea Tow operators respond to a variety of marine assistance situations such as vessel breakdowns, fuel delivery needs, battery jumps, and emergency tows. A typical day can involve being on call for urgent dispatches, performing routine maintenance on vessels and equipment, and providing guidance to boaters on safe practices. Operators may also collaborate closely with teammates, the Coast Guard, and marina staff to ensure swift, professional assistance. The nature of the job means each day can bring new challenges and problem-solving opportunities on the water. This dynamic work environment is ideal for those who enjoy hands-on tasks and helping others in sometimes unpredictable conditions.
What is a Sea Tow?
A Sea Tow job involves providing marine assistance and towing services to boaters in need. Captains and crew members respond to calls for fuel delivery, jump-starts, ungroundings, and emergency tows. The job requires knowledge of navigation, seamanship, and safety procedures. Sea Tow operators work in various weather conditions to ensure the safety and assistance of boaters on the water.

Job description
Boater's World Marine Centers is seeking an experienced Mobile Marine Evaluation Technician to join our growing Service, Inventory, and Consignment teams.
This is not your typical dealership technician position.
As a Mobile Marine Evaluation Technician, you'll travel throughout Florida evaluating boats being considered for consignment, trade, or direct purchase. Using your technical expertise, you'll inspect vessels, perform engine diagnostics, conduct sea trials, and clearly communicate your findings to boat owners while providing detailed inspection reports to our internal Service, Inventory, and Consignment teams.
This position requires more than strong mechanical ability-you'll often be the only Boater's World Marine Centers representative on-site. Professional communication, sound judgment, and the ability to explain technical findings in a customer-friendly manner are just as important as your diagnostic skills.
When field evaluations allow, you'll also assist with used boat repairs, mechanical reconditioning, and inventory preparation at our Bradenton location and other company dealerships throughout Florida.
If you're looking for a role where every day is different, enjoy traveling, working independently, and helping build one of Florida's premier used boat inventories, we'd love to hear from you.
Why This Role Stands Out
- Travel throughout Florida evaluating a wide variety of boats and marine brands
- Play a direct role in determining which boats become part of our inventory
- Work independently while representing one of the fastest-growing marine dealership groups in the country
- Utilize advanced diagnostic equipment, scan tools, and compression testing equipment
- Perform sea trials, mechanical evaluations, and light mobile repairs
- Company vehicle, tools, diagnostic equipment, and mobile technology provided
- Opportunity to help launch and grow a new mobile evaluation program
- Factory certification opportunities and long-term career growth
What You'll Do
Boat Evaluations & Diagnostics
- Travel throughout Florida to perform on-site evaluations of boats being considered for consignment, trade, or direct purchase
- Complete company inspection checklists for every evaluation
- Perform engine diagnostics, scan reports, compression testing, and mechanical inspections
- Evaluate engines, steering, controls, electrical systems, fuel systems, cooling systems, trim systems, onboard accessories, and trailer condition
- Conduct sea trials when appropriate to evaluate engine performance, shifting, steering, handling, and overall vessel operation
- Safely launch and retrieve boats as needed to complete water testing and evaluations
- Capture detailed photographs and videos documenting vessel condition
- Identify and accurately document visible fiberglass, hull, deck, transom, or structural concerns for specialist review
- Prepare detailed inspection reports with repair recommendations and preliminary parts and labor requirements
- Professionally explain inspection findings and diagnostic results to boat owners without discussing valuations, pricing, or acquisition commitments
- Communicate all findings promptly with the Service, Inventory, and Consignment teams
Mobile Repairs & Reconditioning
- Perform approved mobile repairs and light reconditioning when practical and authorized
- Complete routine maintenance, electrical diagnosis, accessory repairs, battery and charging system repairs, and other approved mechanical repairs
- Repair and recondition used boats at Bradenton and other dealership locations when field assignments allow
- Perform minor trailer repairs and basic trailer maintenance when appropriate
- Help prepare acquired inventory for resale while maintaining dealership quality standards
Equipment & Field Operations
- Operate and maintain an assigned company vehicle, diagnostic equipment, tools, and mobile inventory
- Safely launch, retrieve, tow, and reposition boats when authorized and properly equipped
- Maintain professional conduct while working at customer homes, marinas, storage facilities, and dealership locations
- Upload inspection reports, photographs, scan results, and repair documentation promptly
- Follow all company safety, environmental, marina-access, customer property, and roadworthiness policies
- Maintain a clean, organized, and professional mobile work environment
Requirements
- Minimum 5 years of professional marine technician experience
- Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills
- Experience working with outboard engines, marine electrical systems, steering, controls, fuel systems, cooling systems, and onboard accessories
- Experience using marine diagnostic scan tools and performing compression testing
- Ability to safely launch, retrieve, operate, and tow boats and trailers
- Ability to conduct sea trials and accurately evaluate vessel performance
- Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly explain technical findings to customers in a professional manner
- Comfortable working independently with minimal supervision
- Excellent organizational and digital documentation skills
- Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to travel throughout Florida, including occasional overnight travel
- OEM certifications preferred but not required
- Previous mobile marine service experience preferred but not required
- Multi-brand outboard experience
- Experience inspecting used boats for dealership acquisition, trade-ins, or consignment
- Previous customer-facing dealership service experience is a plus
- Experience preparing detailed inspection reports and repair recommendations
Why Join Boater's World Marine Centers?
- Be part of one of the fastest-growing marine dealership groups in the country
- Unique opportunity to combine diagnostics, travel, inspections, customer interaction, and inventory support
- Company vehicle, tools, and diagnostic equipment provided
- Medical, dental, vision, and life insurance
- 401(k) with company match
- Paid time off and paid holidays

- Factory training and certification opportunities
- Long-term career advancement throughout the Outdoor Network family
