Collaborates with the Special Education Coordinator, provides direction for special education support assistants and manages IEP caseload of students in the program. This is a new program offering an opportunity to build the program from the ground up.
The facility is unique, located with access to redwood forest, hiking trails and 1 acre school garden. Job Description / Essential Elements: Print HARMONY UNION SCHOOL DISTRICT Special Education: Resource Specialist General Job Description The Resource Specialist provides an educational program for students who are educationally challenged and exhibit needs in their academic and social learning beyond those expected among the general student population. Students assigned to the resource specialist have been identified through the school study team and IEP process.
The resource specialist typically works with the student in support of the classroom teacher and does not replace the student's regular teacher. The resource teacher typically sees the assigned student one hour or one period per day throughout the week. The resource specialist teacher is expected to create and foster a classroom environment and atmosphere supportive of the student's academic and social learning needs.
The resource specialist teacher is expected to be able to provide assistance to assigned students in any of the required academic subjects to include English-language arts, reading, mathematics, science, and social studies. An important aspect of the resource specialist teacher's responsibilities is the socialization and adaption of the student to the school environment. The resource specialist teacher is expected to be an active participant in the school culture and participate in the supervision and safe operation of the campus as needed.
The resource specialist teacher is expected to work in a collaborative manner with school colleagues in the development and refinement of instructional programs, materials and activities that support the specific students assigned to the specialist. The resource specialist teacher is expected to be a positive role model and demonstrate a profound love for education and learning. Duties and Responsibilities of the Resource Specialist Teacher Assess the needs of assigned students through consultation with classroom teachers, school psychologist, student records, IEP documents, the student's parents, and observations of the student's work in order to develop strategies to assist the student academically and socially.
Provide supportive activities and lessons in any core academic area of instruction to include English-language arts, mathematics, science and social studies in which the student demonstrates a need for assistance; Provide activities and encouragement intended to build successful student attitudes and readiness for learning and school; Develop a rich variety of lesson plans and objectives that engage students in learning activities and experiences that support the content standards, the student's learning style, and success in school; Provide planned learning experiences that assist students inthe development of time management, organizational and study skills that will allow them to be successful in school; Participate locally in the selection and implementation of appropriate state approved textbooks and supplemental materials that assist students in achieving the required instructional goals and objectives; Incorporate California's Model Teaching Standards into the daily delivery of instruction in the classroom; Provide individual and small group instruction in order to better adapt curriculum to the needs of each student; Establish and maintain standards of classroom behavior that abide by the District and school codes of student conduct; Encourage and motivate students to think independently and take personal responsibility for their work and progress; Communicate effectively and regularly with students and parents regarding student progress and needs; Develop an effective system for checking student performance and progress on a regular and timely basis; Maintain legally required records of student needs, progress, and skills; provide for the required IEP and Tri-annual assessments of students; assist school staff with their role in these processes; Participate in and support school-wide and District assessment programs aimed at developing individual, grade level and school-wide data to assist in the design, refinement and implementation of instructional strategies for students; Participate in approved workshops, college level coursework, and district in-services in order to maintain a high level of professional competence in the assigned subject and education in general; Other Professional Requirements Serve as a resource to other staff regarding learning disorders and the needs of students who are challenged by specific learning disorders; Serve as a resource to staff regarding educational and behavior strategies that may be helpful with assigned students in their mainstream classrooms; Maintain a safe and orderly classroom environment; Post behavior and safety notices in a clear, identifiable location; Regularly attend all faculty, grade level and subject matter meetings; Plan and coordinate the work of teacher aides and student aides; Arrive promptly for the start of school and for all meetings and supervision duties; Notify appropriate personnel of the need for a substitute and the office manager regarding the teacher's impending absence; Maintain clear and appropriate lesson plans that may be used by substitute teachers in the event of an absence; Maintain accurate, up-to-date student attendance and academic progress records; Pass out notices and messages received from school office in a timely manner; Maintain an up-to-date inventory of classroom equipment, textbooks, and supplies; Be familiar and support District policies and school procedures regarding student conduct, field trips, use of volunteers in the classroom, student safety and emergency response plans; Attend Back to School Nights, Open House activities and participate in planned parent conferences, student study teams, and IEP meetings as requested Responsible to The resource specialist teacher is directly responsible to the school principal, while also working cooperatively with consortium and SELPA personnel. The principal provides direction as needed, supervision and evaluates the teacher in line with district policy. Qualifications Appropriate California Teaching Credential that authorizes teaching at the assigned grade level; California Resource Specialist authorization; CLAD or its legal equivalent Highly qualified teacher certification Prior successful teaching experience with primary age students; GI Evidence of effective organizational and classroom management skills; Evidence of effective and appropriate oral and written communication skills; GI Effective skills and knowledge to make use of technology in communicating with parents and families, as well as providing for appropriate student and classroom record keeping.
