Scrum Master Agile Project Manager information

What is a Scrum Master Agile Project Manager?

A Scrum Master Agile Project Manager is a professional who facilitates and manages the agile process for a development team, using the Scrum framework. Their main role is to ensure the team adheres to agile principles, remove obstacles, and help improve team collaboration and performance. They act as a servant leader, guiding the team through Scrum ceremonies like sprints, stand-ups, and retrospectives, and help maintain focus on delivering high-quality products. Unlike traditional project managers, Scrum Masters do not assign tasks but empower the team to self-organize and make decisions. They also work closely with product owners and stakeholders to ensure project goals are clear and achievable.

How does a Scrum Master Agile Project Manager typically facilitate collaboration between cross-functional teams?

A Scrum Master Agile Project Manager plays a key role in fostering effective communication and collaboration among cross-functional teams by organizing and leading agile ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives. They ensure that team members are aligned on project goals, help remove obstacles, and encourage open dialogue to address issues proactively. Additionally, they work closely with Product Owners to clarify requirements and prioritize tasks, creating an environment where team members can focus on delivering value efficiently. By promoting transparency and a culture of continuous improvement, they help teams reach their full potential.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Scrum Master Agile Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Scrum Master Agile Project Manager, you need a solid understanding of Agile methodologies, experience in project management, and often a relevant certification like Certified ScrumMaster (CSM) or PMI-ACP. Familiarity with tools such as Jira, Trello, or Asana for managing backlogs and sprints is typically required. Strong facilitation, conflict resolution, and communication skills help foster team collaboration and drive continuous improvement. These skills are crucial for ensuring successful Agile project delivery, maximizing team performance, and adapting to changing project requirements.

Can a Scrum Master become a project manager?

A Scrum Master can transition to a project manager role, as both positions involve leadership, planning, and team coordination. However, project managers often require broader skills in scope management, budgeting, and stakeholder communication, which may necessitate additional training or certifications like PMP. The transition depends on individual experience and the specific requirements of the organization.

Project Manager / Scrum Master (Data & Databricks) โ€“ Enterprise Client

Location: Onsite 3 days/week

Type: Long Term, Multi-year Contract

Our enterprise client is seeking an experienced Project Manager / Scrum Master with strong data platform knowledge and handsโ€‘on experience supporting teams working in Databricks, Teradata, and modern data environments. This role supports a highโ€‘visibility program within the ITSMO organization and requires exceptional communication, leadership, and delivery management skills.

Role Overview

The PM/Scrum Master will drive delivery across multiple data engineering and data governance workstreams, ensuring alignment with program objectives, executive expectations, and Agile best practices. This role is responsible for facilitating Scrum ceremonies, maintaining story hygiene, managing risks and blockers, and ensuring consistent reporting across teams.

You will partner closely with Process Owners, Product Owners, and leadership to support PI Planning, coordinate demos, and maintain standardized Agile/Jira practices across the program.

Key Responsibilities

Project & Program Delivery

  • Provide clear, concise status updates for executive and leadership reporting.
  • Own projectโ€‘level risks, issues, and blockers; ensure timely escalation and resolution.
  • Maintain accountability for scope, cost, schedule, and quality across assigned workstreams.
  • Develop project plans, drive milestones, and ensure effective change management throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Establish and maintain communication plans with project teams and key stakeholders.

Scrum & Agile Leadership

  • Facilitate all Scrum ceremonies: Sprint Planning, Daily Standups, Sprint Reviews, Story Refinement/Backlog Grooming, and Retrospectives.
  • Keep teams organized, focused, and aligned with priorities and PI commitments.
  • Support Product/Process Owners in backlog organization, prioritization, and PI Planning readiness.
  • Ensure stories are updated to reflect accurate status and meet PMO/Program Management standards.
  • Provide programโ€‘level guidance on Agile/Jira frameworks, identify gaps, and drive consistency across ITSMO Scrum teams.

Data Platform Workflow Awareness

  • Understand Databricks workflows (notebooks, jobs, pipelines) to effectively manage delivery, identify blockers, and communicate progress.
  • Coordinate with data engineering teams to ensure dependencies, data quality checks, and deployment steps are properly tracked.
  • Support teams in preparing content for Program Increment (PI) demos.

Tools & Documentation

  • Build and maintain Jira boards, dashboards, and reporting views.
  • Prepare documentation, daily standups summaries, status reports, and time accounting.
  • Utilize Visio, Excel, and other tools to support project planning and communication.

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5โ€“10+ years of Project Management and Scrum Master experience in enterprise environments.
  • Strong background in data platforms, data engineering workflows, or data governance.
  • Experience supporting teams working in Databricks, Teradata, or similar data ecosystems.
  • Deep knowledge of Agile/Scrum, Jira, and enterprise delivery frameworks.
  • Exceptional communication, stakeholder management, and executiveโ€‘level reporting skills.
  • Strong analytical, problemโ€‘solving, and decisionโ€‘making abilities.
  • Ability to manage multiple teams, dependencies, and complex technical delivery.
  • Certified Scrum Master (CSM) required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Program Increment (PI) Planning and Agile at scale (SAFe or similar).
  • Background in Data Science or Data Governance.
  • Experience in large, matrixed enterprise environments.
  • Ability to translate technical concepts into clear businessโ€‘level updates.

Why This Role Matters

This PM/Scrum Master will play a critical role in ensuring alignment between leadership priorities and delivery teams, driving consistency across Agile practices, and supporting a major data modernization initiative. Itโ€™s an opportunity to influence programโ€‘level standards while supporting highโ€‘impact data engineering work.
