Job description

Smith & Loveless is united under one cause: “Protecting Water. Protecting People.”  We are seeking a Marketing Communications Intern to partner with our experienced marketing team in this environmentally focused industry.

A Marketing Communications Intern at Smith and Loveless will assist with the department’s variety of marketing communications, internal and external communications and public relations projects. These activities include digital marketing development such as eBlasts, Social media content, PDF brochures, news/product releases for industry trade media, blog posts, marketing content for company website(s), and collateral for trade shows. The position promises to provide a wealth of tangible experience and portfolio content.

This is a year-round PAID internship for a local Kansas City marketing/communications student available to work 16+ hrs/wk minimum Monday through Friday. Internship will NOT provide college credit. Work schedule will be determined at the beginning of each semester.  Must be currently enrolled in a Journalism, Strategic Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or relative degree program.

Job duties

  • Multi-Format Writing: Produce "digital-first" content including blog posts, e-newsletters, project profiles, and short-form video scripts.
  • Basic Visual Assets: Use Adobe Creative Suite tools to create infographics, social cards, and simple video clips to accompany technical text.
  • Social Media contribution: Draft, schedule, and/or monitor posts specifically for LinkedIn and X (Twitter), focusing on B2B thought leadership and strategic brand promotion.
  • Potentially assist with advertising content for digital (banners) and print (display ads).
  • Drafting PR Materials: Prepare standard press and B2B product releases
  • List Management:  Research, maintain and update "hit lists" of market targets and B2B influencers.
  • Event & Trade Show Logistics: Assist in the execution of virtual events, and in-person expo/marketing events
  • Market Monitoring: Track industry and market-specific news, competitor mentions, and "share of voice" using monitoring tools; provide periodic summaries.
  • Search engine / AI optimization: Prepare website content with clear headings and FAQs to ensure it is easily cited by AI search summaries.
  • Email & Lead Nurture: Assist in setting up prospect eBlasts and automated "drip" email campaigns
  • Data Entry & database work: Maintain the accuracy of prospect data
  • KPI Tracking: Help compile reports on "middle-funnel" metrics, such as website engagement, email open rates, and social media conversions.
  • Attribution Support: Help connect marketing activities to the sales pipeline by tracking which pieces of content high-value leads interacted with.
  • Market Research: Conduct "competitive audits" to identify gaps in competitor messaging or new opportunities in particular B2B sectors
  • Keep work area neat and clean.

Skills/Requirements

  • Must be currently enrolled in a Journalism, Strategic Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, or relative degree program.
  • College-class level projects and portfolio examples are required.
  • Prior related internship experience will be considered a PLUS.    
  • Ability to write for marketing, public relations and/or social media purposes. 
  • Possess a working knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft applications is preferred (Especially INDD, Excel, PowerPoint and Word).
  • Experience using either Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is desired but considered a plus.
