Scpi Python information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an SCPI Python Developer, and why are they important?

To excel as an SCPI Python Developer, you need strong programming skills in Python, deep understanding of the Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI) protocol, and a background in electrical engineering or a related field. Familiarity with instrument control libraries (such as PyVISA), test automation frameworks, and experience with oscilloscopes, multimeters, or similar lab equipment is often required. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are soft skills that help developers troubleshoot complex instrument interactions and collaborate with engineering teams. These skills ensure reliable automation, efficient device integration, and accurate data acquisition in laboratory and testing environments.

What are some common challenges faced by SCPI Python developers when integrating with legacy systems?

SCPI Python developers often encounter challenges when integrating modern Python-based solutions with legacy systems that use the Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI) protocol. Issues may include communication mismatches, lack of up-to-date documentation, and handling diverse instrument response formats. Overcoming these typically involves writing custom Python wrappers, rigorous testing with physical instruments, and close collaboration with hardware engineers to ensure seamless data exchange. Familiarity with both Python libraries (such as PyVISA) and SCPI command structures is crucial for success.

What are SCPI Python developers?

SCPI Python developers are professionals who specialize in using Python to communicate with and control instruments that support the Standard Commands for Programmable Instruments (SCPI) protocol. They write scripts and software to automate testing, data collection, and instrument management in research, engineering, or manufacturing environments. Their expertise includes understanding both the SCPI command set and how to use Python libraries, such as PyVISA, to interface with various test and measurement devices.

What is the difference between Scpi Python vs Test Automation Engineer?

AspectScpi PythonTest Automation Engineer
Required credentialsPython programming, SCPI command knowledgeProgramming skills, testing frameworks, scripting
Work environmentLaboratories, hardware testing labs, embedded systemsSoftware testing environments, development teams
Industry usageElectronics, instrumentation, measurementSoftware development, quality assurance

While both roles involve scripting and technical skills, Scpi Python specialists focus on controlling and automating test equipment using SCPI commands with Python, primarily in hardware and measurement environments. Test Automation Engineers develop comprehensive testing frameworks for software products, often using various scripting languages. The roles overlap in scripting expertise but differ in application focus and industry context.

Job description

Who we are

With its A.I.-powered robotic technology platform, Symbotic is changing the way consumer goods move through the supply chain. Intelligent software orchestrates advanced robots in a high-density, end-to-end system – reinventing warehouse automation for increased efficiency, speed and flexibility.

What we do

We areseekinga highly motivated and hands-on Senior TestEngineer(EE)to lead the development, deployment, and continuous improvement of manufacturing test solutions for complex electromechanical and robotic systems. This roleis responsible fordriving electrical test architecture, developing scalable manufacturing test fixtures, supporting PCBA and hardware design, and leading deployment activities across internal manufacturing sites and Contract Manufacturers (CMs).

The ideal candidate has strong experience in hardware design, electrical debugging, automation, and manufacturing support, along with proven leadership capabilities. This individual will lead technical projects, mentor junior engineers, collaborate cross-functionally with Hardware, Software, Manufacturing, and Operations teams, and drive test strategy from concept through production deployment.

What you'll do

  • Lead the design and development of electrical schematics, PCBAs, and interface boards for manufacturing test fixtures and validation systems.

  • Own end-to-end hardware bring-up activities includingcomponentselection, schematic reviews, layout reviews, soldering/rework, and board-level debugging.

  • Architect and develop scalable manufacturing test systems involving power distribution, relays, multiplexing, signal conditioning, DAQ systems, and measurementinstrumentation.

  • Develop andmaintainautomated test software and frameworks (Python preferred) for instrument control, test execution, data logging, and production diagnostics.

  • Perform advanced electrical debugging using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DMMs, power analyzers, and protocol analyzers to isolate board-level and system-level failures.

  • Lead manufacturing deployment and production support activities across internal sites and Contract Manufacturers (CMs), including troubleshooting, yield improvement, and failure analysis.

  • Analyze test data, production failures, and field issues to drive improvements in product reliability, test coverage, and manufacturing efficiency.

  • Definetest strategies, validation plans, and manufacturing test requirements for new product introductions (NPI).

  • Collaborate closely with Electrical, Firmware, Software, Mechanical, and Manufacturing Engineering teams to resolve technical challenges and improve system performance.

  • Lead technical projects and coordinate execution timelines, deliverables, and deployment readiness.

  • Mentor andprovidetechnical guidance to junior engineers and technicians, helpingestablishengineering best practices and debugging methodologies.

  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives for test architecture, fixture reliability, automation, and operational efficiency.

What you'll need

  • BS in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) with minimum of 8 years of hands-on experience in electrical hardware design, manufacturing test engineering, or system validation.

  • Strongexpertisein schematic capture, PCBA design, and hardware development using tools such as Altium, or equivalent.

  • Extensive experience in board bring-up, soldering, rework, and component-level debugging.

  • Deep understanding of analog and digital circuit design including power electronics, signal integrity, grounding, EMI/noise considerations, and protection circuits.

  • Strong hands-on experience with electrical test instrumentation including oscilloscopes, DMMs, programmable power supplies, electronic loads, logic analyzers, and DAQ systems.
