The Role


As Director, Data Scouting, you will lead the strategy, governance, and commercial management of CPP Investments' external data portfolio. Reporting to the Managing Director, you will partner with investment teams and enterprise stakeholders to optimize external data sourcing, vendor relationships, and commercial outcomes. You will lead a team of market data professionals while driving transparency, operational excellence, and value across the firm's external data investments.


The Team


Technology & Operations enables CPP Investments to deliver on its global investment mandate by providing secure, innovative, and data-driven technology capabilities. The department partners across the organization to deliver trusted data, modern platforms, and strategic technology services that enhance investment decision-making and operational excellence.

The Data Scouting team is responsible for the strategy, sourcing, governance, and commercial management of external data across CPP Investments. Working closely with investment teams and enterprise partners, the team ensures external data is accessible, cost-effective, and aligned with business priorities while maximizing the value of the firm's data investments.

Accountabilities

  • Develop and execute the strategy for CPP Investments' external data portfolio, ensuring data products align with evolving business needs while improving value, transparency, and portfolio efficiency.

  • Provide strategic advice to investment teams and enterprise stakeholders on external data sourcing, vendor capabilities, and commercial models to support informed investment decisions.

  • Lead the evaluation, negotiation, and management of complex third-party data contracts, ensuring commercial value, consistency, compliance, and effective risk management.

  • Build and manage strategic relationships with external data providers, driving vendor performance, governance, innovation, and long-term partnership value.

  • Identify opportunities to optimize external data spend through portfolio rationalization, contract consolidation, product substitution, and disciplined cost management.

  • Lead, coach, and develop a high-performing team while fostering a collaborative, inclusive culture focused on continuous improvement and professional growth.

  • Influence senior stakeholders and lead cross-functional initiatives that strengthen governance, standardize processes, and advance CPP Investments' external data strategy.

What You Bring

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent combination of education and experience in Business, Finance, Information Management, Technology, or a related discipline.

  • Significant experience leading market data, vendor management, strategic sourcing, procurement, or commercial management functions within a complex organization.

  • Demonstrated success negotiating high-value, complex commercial agreements and managing strategic supplier relationships.

  • Strong commercial judgment with experience optimizing costs, managing vendor performance, and delivering measurable business value.

  • Deep understanding of the market data vendor landscape, commercial licensing models, and industry best practices.

  • Proven leadership experience developing high-performing teams and influencing senior stakeholders across matrixed organizations.

  • CFA, CAIA, or equivalent investment domain knowledge is considered an asset.
