Job description

As a Coach for the SCORES program, you will conduct weekly soccer practices and lead the team at weekly games while fostering student participation in both soccer and writing activities. Your responsibilities include recording attendance, managing equipment, coordinating with other coaches and staff, and participating in program evaluations and special events. Additionally, you will promote teamwork, leadership, and sportsmanship in a fun and engaging environment for poet-athletes.


Fall Contract Period: September 12, 2026 – December 11, 2026

Schedule: Monday to Friday, ~ 90mins to 5 hours weekly (During after school hours)

Compensation: $2,300 (Base rate will vary depending on the number of sites)

Task-Based Bonuses: Available for attending Coach Training, Fall Frenzy, Jamboree, or any scheduled field trip, at $100 per event.

Position Title: Soccer Coach-Mentor

Reports To: Programs Manager OR Coordinator (Depending on the school site)


Duties include, but are not limited to: 


Program Duties

    1. Practice and teach excellence in the soccer program and promote the full participation of students in the writing and soccer program. Have FUN!
    2. Conduct soccer practices at least once per week, for 90 minutes each session, for 11 weeks for SCORES student-athletes.
    3. Lead team at all home and away games, once per week.
    4. Complete all SCORES Professional Development Program requirements, including mandatory attendance at training courses and workshops.
    5. Distribute, collect, maintain, and return SCORES-issued equipment.
    6. Distribute snacks to children on soccer days.
    7. Abide by SCORES league rules, organizational guidelines, and game schedules.
    8. Teach and promote appropriate teamwork, commitment, leadership, and sportsmanship.
    9. Communicate regularly with SCORES staff.
    10. Attend at least one poetry workshop throughout the fall season


Administration Duties

    1. Record poet-athlete & coach attendance on LeagueApps before each session.
    2. Sign out all students at the end of sessions.
    3. Check with SCORES Staff Lead to ensure your attendance is accurately recorded for payroll purposes.
    4. Participate in all program evaluations.

Communication

    1. Check in with your SCORES Staff Lead weekly for SCORES program updates.
    2. Read carefully the weekly bulletin delivered via email.
    3. Communicate regularly with other coach-mentors at your school to ensure that students are fully participating in all aspects of the program.
    4. Respond to phone and email communication from the SCORES Staff Lead within 48 hours.


Event & Game Day Coordination

    1. Attend all SCORES weekly game days and special events, such as the Fall Frenzy.
    2. Chaperone poet-athletes to SCORES soccer-related field trips.


Attendance Duties
If a coach-mentor must be absent from a soccer practice due to an emergency, they must arrange to swap a practice day with another coach or find a suitable substitute. Before leaving the school grounds, ensure that all poet-athletes are accounted for. Notify the SCORES Staff Lead as soon as possible regarding your absence and the name of the substitute.


Onboarding Requirements
Eligibility to work at New York SCORES is contingent on passing the following requirements:

  • Pass a National Background Check
  • CPR/AED/First-Aid Certificate
  • US Soccer SafeSport Certificate (Phases 1 and 2)
  • Digital Fingerprinting (required by NYCDOE)
