Under the supervision of the ZCS Director, performs janitorial duties for the ZCS to keep the facilities clean, orderly and safe for patrons and employees.  Maintain all equipment, Tribal Cemeteries, vehicles, and grounds. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Wash windows, clean, dust, mop, wax, and vacuum office areas, conference rooms and bathrooms.
  • Change light bulbs and fluorescent lights, clean snow from sidewalks, mow lawns, trim shrubbery, and empty trash and garage containers as required.
  • Complete carpentry work, drywall, and painting, utilizing ladders, and gardening.
  • Assist Cultural Resource Management staff with cleaning sensitive collections in exhibit area.
  • Review daily event notices to be sure work tasks are adjusted according to needs of events, room bookings, and weather or seasonal needs.
  • Secure and lock building on completion of shift.
  • Maintain the appearance of housekeeping areas, must perform regular inspection of ZCS facilities for sanitation, order, safety and proper performance of assigned duties.
  • Notify management concerning minor repairs and abide by all safety regulations.
  • Provide excellent customer service for all internal and external customers of the operations at all times. Provide solutions for customer concerns and continually focus on customer service as our top priority.
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality and present a positive, professional demeanor and image at all times.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • One year experience with basic maintenance and grounds keeping.
  • Must be able to pass background check to meet the employment eligibility requirements as they pertain to the position.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience with operation, maintenance, and janitorial equipment.

License, Certification, or Special Requirements:

  • Must have a valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with the proper designation required for the vehicle utilized to perform the job duties; must be able to obtain and maintain a Tribal Driver’s License and qualify for coverage by SCIT auto liability insurance carrier.
  • Native American preference shall apply to all positions.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of use of maintenance tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Knowledge of the methods and practices used in preventive maintenance and repair work.

  • Skill in the use of cleaning tools, chemicals, cleaners, and disinfectants.
  • Skill in the safe operation of power tools and shop equipment.
  • Skill in diagnosing and repair of equipment utilized.
  • Ability to safely operate and use maintenance equipment such as mowers, pruners, trimmers, and power washers.
  • Ability to use hand tools and lawn maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to communicate efficiently and effectively both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in regards to appearance and grooming while following the dress code.
  • Ability to maintain confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours and various work schedules.

Physical Demands:

  • Strenuous physical exertion in climbing ladders and lifting heavy objects.
  • Frequent use of hands, wrists, fingers associated with repair equipment.
  • Required to stand and walk for extended periods of time and reach with arms and hands.
  • Occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Normal visual acuity, ability to talk and hear.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment:

  • Must possess sufficient stamina to work under all types of weather conditions including extreme hot/cold and to lift, carry, push, or pull a variety of tools, equipment and materials
  • Exposure to chemicals and hazardous materials and moving parts may occur.
  • Situations where safety equipment is needed may occur.
  • Extended hours and irregular shifts may be required.
  • Travel may be required.
