Job description

Job Overview

The Electron Microscopy group at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a Scientific Staff scientist to lead the optimization of two forthcoming aberrationโ€‘corrected, monochromated scanning transmission electron microscopes (STEM) and to conduct independent research in advanced electron microscopy and spectroscopy. The role requires expertise in EELS, instrument development, and user program management, and operates within the CFNโ€™s strategic focus on energyโ€‘security, microelectronics, and quantum materials.

Responsibilities

As a Scientific Staff member for STM & Spectroscopy you will:

  • Lead the commissioning and operation of the two new STEMs.
  • Develop instrumentation science to enable quantitative, analytical STEM.
  • Conduct independent nanoscience research, publish papers, and present at conferences.
  • Manage the user program, including proposal review, allocation, scheduling, and user support.
  • Assist with dayโ€‘toโ€‘day operations of the facilityโ€™s electron microscopes.
  • Mentor postโ€‘docs, graduate, and undergraduate students in professional development.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ph.D. in Materials Science, Physics, Chemistry, or a related Engineering discipline; minimum 2years postโ€‘Ph.D. experience.
  • Demonstrated highโ€‘impact research using and developing aberrationโ€‘corrected STEM and EELS, with frequent peerโ€‘reviewed publications.
  • Technical expertise and strong interest in optimizing electron microscopes.
  • Active membership in electron microscopy and materials science professional societies; regular conference presentations.
  • Commitment to laboratory safety and a respectful work environment.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • We prefer a Ph.D. holder with a minimum of 4years postโ€‘Ph.D. experience.
  • Experience with a broad range of electron microscopy techniques, including 4Dโ€‘STEM, tomography, and inโ€‘situ methods.
  • Evidence of developing data analytics tools using Python or other programming languages for microscopy data (spectra and images).
  • Handsโ€‘on experience operating and maintaining Nion STEMs.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and enthusiasm for interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to work effectively in both leadership and supporting team roles.

โ€ข Brookhaven National Laboratory is committed to providing fair, equitable, and competitive compensation. The full salary range for this position is $103,650 โ€“ $145,733 per year. Salary offers will be commensurate with qualifications, education, and experience.
