Job description

We are seeking a Scientific Software Developer with 3 or more years of experience to join the staff at NASA/GSFCโ€™s Astrophysics Science Division (ASD), which supports a broad program of research in astronomy, astrophysics, and fundamental physics, to work on the XRISM mission. XRISM is currently in its second year of routine guest observations, and this role reflects that maturity โ€“ responsibilities span both ongoing software maintenance and support as well as continued development. Specific duties of this position include software development, maintenance, and support for calibrating and analyzing data from space instruments; writing/editing technical documentation and user guides; and assisting with user support. Also included are development, operation, and maintenance of software for pipeline processing (including monitoring and troubleshooting of operational pipelines), data ingest, and archiving.

Required:
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics, or Physical Sciences
  • C/C++, Perl, and shell scripting in UNIX/Linux/Mac OSX context
  • Technical Writing experience
  • 3 or more years of experience
  • US Citizenship or Permanent Residency (LPR) required, with US residency for the past 3 consecutive years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Tier 1 Investigation through NASA.
  • Familiarity with Fortran and Python
  • Experience w/ scientific software packages (e.g. FTOOLS) and FITS data format
  • Experience in developing portable/multi-platform software
  • Experience supporting an operational mission or Science Data Center (SDC) environment
  • Some experience in analyzing astronomical data
