Science Visualization information

What is science visualization?

Science visualization is the process of creating visual representations of scientific data or concepts to make them easier to understand and communicate. This can include charts, graphs, animations, 3D models, and interactive graphics. Science visualization helps researchers, educators, and the public interpret complex information, discover patterns, and share findings effectively. It combines expertise in science, data analysis, and visual design.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a science visualization specialist?

To thrive as a Science Visualization Specialist, you need a solid background in scientific concepts, data analysis, and visual storytelling, often supported by a degree in science, graphic design, or a related field. Proficiency with visualization tools such as Python (Matplotlib, Seaborn), R, Adobe Creative Suite, or 3D modeling software is typically required. Strong communication, creativity, and attention to detail help translate complex data into clear, engaging visuals for diverse audiences. These skills are crucial for accurately conveying scientific information and fostering understanding among stakeholders and the public.

How does a science visualization professional typically collaborate with researchers and other stakeholders during a project?

Science Visualization professionals often work closely with researchers, subject matter experts, and communication teams to accurately represent complex data and scientific concepts. Early in a project, they attend meetings to understand the research goals and identify key messages. Throughout the process, they maintain open communication to ensure that visualizations are both scientifically accurate and visually engaging. This collaboration may involve iterative feedback sessions, adjustments to visual elements, and discussions about the best formats for target audiences. Such teamwork is essential for producing effective and credible visual content.

What is the difference between Science Visualization vs Scientific Illustrator?

AspectScience VisualizationScientific Illustrator
Required CredentialsDegree in science, visualization, or related fields; skills in 3D modeling and visualization softwareDegree in fine arts, illustration, or related fields; proficiency in traditional and digital illustration tools
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, universities, media companies, scientific institutionsPublishing houses, research institutions, freelance work, scientific publications
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by scientists and educators to create visual data representationsUsed by publishers, researchers, and museums to produce detailed scientific illustrations

Science Visualization focuses on creating digital visual representations of scientific data and concepts, often using 3D modeling and animation. Scientific Illustrators produce detailed, hand-drawn or digital illustrations to communicate scientific ideas visually. While both roles require scientific understanding, visualization emphasizes data-driven visuals, whereas illustration emphasizes artistic accuracy and detail.

What jobs use scientific illustration?

Scientific illustration is used in roles such as scientific illustrators, medical illustrators, and biological artists who create detailed visuals for textbooks, research publications, and educational materials. These professionals often work in laboratories, research institutions, or freelance settings, utilizing tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop, and may require a background in biology or art.

Job description

Application close date:

Applications will be accepted on an ongoing basis until the requisition is closed.

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

Blue Origin is pioneering the future of space-based communications with TeraWave, a revolutionary satellite communications network designed to deliver symmetrical data speeds of up to 6 Tbps anywhere on Earth. This multi-orbit constellation will consist of optically interconnected satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) and medium Earth orbit (MEO), providing enterprise-grade connectivity for critical operations worldwide.

About TeraWave

Blue Origin is building TeraWave, a next-generation satellite constellation designed to provide high-bandwidth, low-latency connectivity across the globe. TeraWave's end-to-end network spans user terminals, satellites and the optical inter-satellite link mesh, gateways, Points of Presence, and supporting ground and operational infrastructure.

About This Role

As a Senior Software Development Engineer within the TeraWave Network Software organization, you will design and build visualization software for a continuously changing satellite network. TeraWave operators and engineers need tools to understand current, historical, planned, and predicted network state across satellites, gateways, Points of Presence, links, routes, traffic, faults, and topology changes. You will transform network topology, telemetry, routing, and operational data into visual applications that support situational awareness, network planning, troubleshooting, anomaly investigation, and operational decisions.

This role is based in Seattle, WA, or Cupertino, CA.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, and operate visualization software for satellite and terrestrial networks.

  • Build geospatial and graph-based views of satellites, links, gateways, routes, and network paths.

  • Create workflows to search, filter, group, aggregate, and navigate current and predicted network state.

  • Enable operators to trace paths, inspect routing behavior, and investigate alarms, failures, and connectivity changes.

  • Develop playback, event-reconstruction, and state-comparison capabilities for incident investigation and topology transition analysis.

  • Build backend services, APIs, and data models for topology, routing, telemetry, inventory, and event data.

  • Implement data delivery mechanisms and optimize performance, security, observability, and resilience across visualization systems.

  • Partner with network engineers, operators, systems engineers, and designers on interfaces and technical reviews.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related STEM field.

  • 5 or more years of professional software development experience in technical domains.

  • Experience developing front-end applications using TypeScript, JavaScript, or React for production systems.

  • Experience integrating production web applications with APIs, streaming data sources, or event-driven systems.

  • Experience with data structures, algorithms, distributed systems, asynchronous processing, and production software testing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience building visualization platforms for network topology, infrastructure monitoring, observability, mapping, or operational systems.

  • Experience with geospatial rendering technologies such as WebGL, Cesium, Mapbox, deck.gl, or Three.js.

  • Experience with graph-visualization technologies such as Cytoscape.js, D3.js, Sigma.js, or Graphviz.

  • Experience designing backend services, APIs, or data models for topology, telemetry, geospatial, or other data-intensive visualization applications.

  • Knowledge of IP networking, routing, packet forwarding, SDN, traffic engineering, or network telemetry.

  • Experience with satellite, aerospace, telecommunications, cloud infrastructure, wireless, or optical systems.

  • Experience developing playback, simulation visualization, event reconstruction, or time-based data-exploration capabilities.
