Job description

Patent Agent/Advisor (Biotech) – Palo Alto

Direct Counsel is seeking a Patent Agent/Advisor with a strong background in biotechnology to join a leading life sciences patent counseling and prosecution practice in Palo Alto. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates with advanced scientific training who are interested in applying their expertise to intellectual property law in a dynamic and highly regarded practice.

The Opportunity

The Patent Agent/Advisor will work closely with attorneys and clients on a variety of matters related to biotechnology patent prosecution and counseling. The role offers exposure to cutting-edge scientific innovations while supporting clients in protecting and advancing their intellectual property portfolios.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct prior art database searches for patentability and freedom-to-operate analyses.

  • Review and analyze patents and scientific publications to support patent prosecution, counseling, and litigation.

  • Draft patent applications and responses to USPTO office actions.

  • Participate in post-grant proceedings before the USPTO.

Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Cellular & Molecular Biology, Immunology, Genetics, Biochemistry, or a related field.

  • Broad scientific knowledge in biotechnology.

  • Superb technical, written, and verbal communication skills in English.

  • Initiative-driven, fast learner, and strong team player.

  • Must be a registered USPTO Patent Agent or eligible to sit for the USPTO registration exam.

  • Law school tuition assistance available for patent agent candidates.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Annual salary range: $125,000 – $205,000 (based on experience and location).
