Job description

Operations Manager - On Demand Courier (24/7 operations)
Location: Ashburn, Virginia
Job Type: Full-Time, Exempt
Industry: Time-Critical / On-Demand Logistics (Life Sciences, Critical Infrastructure)
Overview
We are seeking an Operations Manager to lead high-touch, on-demand logistics operations supporting clients in life sciences, aviation (AOG), and other critical infrastructure sectors.
You will oversee live operations, managing a network of independent contractor (1099) drivers, dispatch coordination, and service delivery where precision, urgency, and accountability are non-negotiable.
If your background is primarily in long-cycle project delivery, PMO structures, or roadmap execution, this role will not be a fit.
This role is for operators who thrive in real-time execution environments-where decisions happen minute-by-minute, service failures have immediate consequences, and relationships drive outcomes. This is a hands-on leadership role-you are in the work, not managing from a distance.
What You'll Own
  • Real-Time Operational Execution
    • Lead day-to-day on-demand delivery operations with tight SLAs and zero margin for error
    • Make rapid, high-stakes decisions under pressure
    • Troubleshoot service disruptions in real time
  • 1099 Driver Network Leadership
    • Manage staff to coach and retain a network of independent contractor drivers
    • Build strong relationships while maintaining performance accountability
    • Ensure adherence with service and client-specific requirements
  • High-Touch Client Delivery
    • Support clients with time-critical, sensitive shipments (e.g., life sciences, medical, data centers)
    • Maintain service quality where failure is not an option
    • Partner closely with internal teams and customers to ensure execution excellence
  • Operational Structure & Detail
    • Ensure accurate job execution, documentation, and billing inputs
    • Identify and correct breakdowns in process, communication, and execution
    • Drive consistency in a fast-moving, variable environment

What This Requires
  • Experience in on-demand, time-critical logistics or transportation
    • Courier, final mile, AOG/NFO, medical/life sciences logistics strongly preferred
  • Proven ability to operate in a high-touch, high-urgency environment
    • You've managed live operations-not just planned them
  • Experience working with 1099 / independent contractor driver models
  • Strong relationship-building skills
    • You can balance accountability with trust across all stakeholders
  • High attention to detail and execution accuracy
    • You understand that small misses create major downstream impacts
  • Comfort with ambiguity, variability, and constant change
    • No two days look the same-and that's the point

Why This Matters
  • Our work supports industries where logistics failures have real consequences-delayed treatments, grounded aircraft, disrupted infrastructure.
  • We don't move packages.
    We move lives forward.

Schedule & Work Environment
  • Full-time role supporting a 24/7/365 operation (evenings/weekends on-call)
  • Fast-paced, high-pressure setting requiring strong focus and adaptability
  • Occasional travel to customer sites and company locations

Requirements
  • Successful completion of: Background check, Drug screening, HIPAA, OSHA, and Bloodborne Pathogen training, TSA clearance completion.
