Job description

Job Title: Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled Medical Laboratory Technician who will perform routine and complex laboratory functions while adhering to technical procedures and utilizing specified equipment. The successful candidate will ensure the accuracy of test results while working independently and will provide corrective actions for operations as needed. This role also involves offering training and services in compliance with accepted standards and regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and complex laboratory tasks in multiple sections of the laboratory with moderate to high complexity.

  • Provide accurate and timely information to meet the needs of the department's customers.

  • Maintain laboratory equipment through scheduled, preventative, and diagnostic maintenance.

  • Participate in Quality Improvement/Quality Assurance activities.

  • Independently perform quality control procedures, document results, and resolve abnormal results while notifying the supervisor.

  • Evaluate current practices, suggest improvements for productivity and expense reduction, and assist in new equipment evaluation.

  • Provide technical guidance to customers regarding laboratory procedures.

  • Participate in professional activities and continuing education.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Communicate and support the Mission and Values of Johnson Memorial Hospital.

  • Conduct activities in compliance with laws, regulations, standards, and hospital policies.

Essential Skills

  • Bachelor's degree in medical technology or related sciences for MT.

  • Associate's degree as a Medical Laboratory Technician for MLT.

  • Certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Technician preferred.

  • Experience in blood bank, micro setups, and molecular testing.

  • Strong analytical and computer skills.

  • Understanding of laboratory operations and procedures.

  • Ability to operate moderate and complex laboratory equipment.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

  • Knowledge of applicable State and Federal regulations.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience in clinical laboratory science, hematology, medical laboratory science, biology, chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.

  • Experience with centrifuges, cell washers, chemistry, hematology, and coagulation analyzers.

  • Ability to handle specimen collection equipment and other laboratory instrumentation.

  • Proficiency in using personal computers, office equipment, and hospital information systems.

  • Strong problem-solving, analytical skills, and ability to work under pressure.

Work Environment

This position is located onsite at Johnson Memorial Hospital and requires working 3rd shift (4 10-hour shifts, 8pm-6am or alternatives like 7-5, 6-4, 10-3 must be covered). The schedule consists of a 4-week rotation: 3 weeks are Sunday-Wednesday and 1 week is Saturday-Tuesday. The work environment involves operating various laboratory equipment and handling multiple tasks with frequent interruptions in a fast-paced setting.
