Job description

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Performs and documents routine laboratory specimen processing, specimen procurement, and limited testing (as defined by education). Verifies patient and specimen identification as demonstrated by having no patient ID errors. Verifies that equipment is functioning in a proper manner. Assists in training laboratory staff. Adheres to CAP regulations regarding the laboratory prep area.
  2. Prioritizes workload and performs testing in compliance with turnaround time goals. Demonstrates an ability to manage a complex task and is able to multitask and prioritize. Produces accuracy on routine and non-routine procedures with no serious errors. Maintains accurate record keeping of log sheets, worksheets, and records. Does equipment maintenance according to schedule. Follows through with suggestions for improvement.
  3. Uses the laboratory system for order entry, resulting reports (as indicated), inquiries, and other necessary functions. Use other hospital applications or job specific applications, maintains current passwords and knowledge.
  4. Communicates information to other members of the patient care team. Demonstrates support of the team members by assisting without having to be asked. Serves as a role model by always going the extra mile.
  5. Take immediate and appropriate action with specimens marked stat. Identifies questionable patient ID information and follows through to resolve the problem and communicates to other team members along with proper documentation. Has positive co-worker feedback.
  6. Accepts assignment without complaint and follows the chain of command to resolve issues. Consistently helps other team members in the attainment of their daily clinical goals. Anticipates need to respond to change. Is pro-active in identifying strategies for improving operation and patient care.
  7. Provides coverage as assigned. Comply with hospital attendance policy. Offers to work extra if needed. Plans breaks and meals considering patient and department needs. Returns from breaks and lunch in assigned time frame. Covers for co-workers during breaks. Follows laboratory vacation policy and has all schedule changes approved by management in an advance. Makes efficient use of time.
  8. Comply with all safety regulations. Practices principles of safety (proper body mechanics, infection prevention, and emergency code response.) Identifies potential safety problems and follows through by reporting to management. Has had no on the job accidents due to unsafe work practices. Ensure all reagents and chemicals are properly labeled and have HFPA label if indicated.
  9. Actively participates in performance improvement and attends all mandatory in-service programs to maintain and improve knowledge and skills. Also participates in voluntary in-service programs in department. Completes annual health service. Submits monthly and annual reports without having to be repeatedly reminded.

Job Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelor of Science in life sciences or nursing preferred. High school graduate or equivalent accepted. A mixture of education in life sciences or nursing with experience with be considered.
