General Function:ย 

The Librarian provides professional library services including but not limited to oversight of a Campus Library, reference services, subject liaison work and Information Literacy instruction in the library both on campus and online.

Minimum Qualifications:ย 

Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science earned from a regionally accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications:ย 

Master of Library Science or Master of Library and Information Science earned from a regionally accredited institution with program accreditation through the American Library Association (ALA) and 2 years' experience in a college or university setting.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, supervision, guidance, development, oversight, and assistance with branch budget management for assigned branch. Recruit, train, and support other members of the assigned branch library team; Ensure compliance with TBR, MSCC, THEC, and other applicable agency policies.
  • LIBRARY USER SERVICES: Assists and teaches students, faculty, and the community users how to access and acquire physical and digital information through the library's catalog. Prepare subject guides, both course-oriented and subject specific for assigned liaison departments. Responds to distance education requests for library services including email, telephone, and online course requests. Supports all aspects of circulation services. Assists patrons in the use of library materials, computer databases, and library equipment.
  • LIBRARY INSTRUCTION: Presents Information Literacy instruction for Motlow students. Provides Library orientation for new students and the community, including tours for classes in use of the library; instruction in the use of library sources to classes on request, both in the library and in the classroom; and digital subject guides. Instructs students on verifying the authority of online content through lateral reading, as well as other fact-checking methods.
  • COLLECTION DEVELOPMENT: Oversees specific subject areas in order to evaluate and recommend library purchases of digital resources; Collaborates with the Head of Collection Development to recommendย  library purchases of print, non-print, and digital resources; maintains balance of subjects in the collection; selects and recommends book orders and non-print material orders; solicits and accepts recommendations from faculty in subject areas; and notifies faculty of new materials in their subject area.
  • May serve on campus committees as assigned and/or appointed.
  • ACCESSIBILITY: Implement accessibility best practices within the branch library by maintaining accessible physical and digital resources, assisting patrons with assistive technologies, and collaborating with Disability Services, faculty, and library administration to ensure compliance with applicable federal and institutional accessibility standards. partnership with Disability Services and library colleagues across all campus locations.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • The librarian has a thorough knowledge of books and eBooks, databases, and additional repositories of scholarly information including open access journals, textbooks, and books.
  • Must have knowledge of customer service principles and be able to apply them in a library setting.
  • Demonstrates a thorough understanding of cloud storage, including Microsoft OneDrive and Google Suite.
  • Has experience using D2L or a similar Learning Management System.
  • Possesses graphic design abilities to create library display signage and subject guide images.
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, with college executives, faculty, staff, students, community leaders, and other stakeholders on matters pertinent to the college including interpersonal interactions, public speaking, and individual or group presentations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective positive working relationships with college executives, faculty, staff, students, community leaders, and other stakeholders on matters pertinent to the college.
  • Maintains relevant and current knowledge of library best practices through continual professional development and / or attendance at professional development events.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies.
