What does a school security officer do?

School security jobs include work as a security officer, school security coordinator, manager, and director of school security. In some settings, such as public universities, security may be provided by a local police station. As a security director, your duties are to develop and implement safety protocols for a school district in coordination with the local school board and other stakeholders. Officers’ responsibilities are to patrol the school grounds, monitor students, traffic, and visitors to the grounds, and guard the school against threats. Most security guard positions are unarmed.

Familiarity with security surveillance systems, communication devices, and incident reporting software is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, alertness, and the ability to remain calm under pressure help in building trust and effectively managing challenging situations. These skills are essential for maintaining a safe school environment, ensuring rapid response to incidents, and fostering positive relationships with students and staff.

They regularly communicate about potential safety concerns, participate in emergency drills, and assist with enforcing school policies. Collaboration often involves attending staff meetings, sharing observations about campus safety, and sometimes providing input on safety protocols or student-related issues.
