PURPOSE: Safety Advocates are located throughout the District schools in order to assist in maintaining an orderly and safe school environment that promotes improved school climate and effective learning opportunities. Safety Advocates are expected to respond to emergencies, deter suspicious activity, and act as a visible presence to maintain order and safety within the school environment.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working under the direct supervision of the building Administrator, duties and responsibilities may vary by building but shall generally include some or all of the following:
  1. Patrolling School Premises: Regularly walking around the school building, parking lots, and surrounding areas to identify potential security issues.
  2. Access Control: Monitoring entry points, checking visitor identification, an ensuring only authorized personnel are allowed access to the school.
  3. Enforcing School Rules: Upholding school policies and regulations, including dress code, student behavior, and visitor protocols.
  4. Responding to Emergencies: Taking immediate action in case of incidents like fire, medical emergencies, active shooter situations, or security breaches.
  5. Investigating suspicious activity: Observing and reporting and suspicious behavior or potential threats to school safety.
  6. Monitoring surveillance systems: Actively observing security cameras and monitoring alarms to detect potential issues.
  7. Communicating with staff and administration: Reporting incidents, concerns and safety issues to school administrators and law enforcement when necessary.
  8. Maintaining a visible presence: Being present and readily available to deter criminal activity and provide a sense of security.
  9. Student interaction: Interacting with student in a positive and professional manner, providing guidance and support when needed.

IMPORTANT SKILLS FOR A SAFETY ADVOCATE:
  • Observation Skills: Ability to attentively monitor surroundings and identify potential threats.
  • Conflict resolution: Capability to de-escalate situations and address conflicts calmly.
  • Communication Skills: Effective verbal and written communication to report incidents and interact with students, staff and visitors.
  • Decision-Making abilities: Quickly assessing situations and making appropriate actions in emergency scenarios.
  • Physical Fitness: Ability to patrol large areas and respond to incidents promptly.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with law enforcement, security, or similar preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on a team
  • Strong communicator
  • Bilingual preferred

PAY GRADE/LEVEL:
As per Union contract - $26.00 per hour
Monday - Friday; 10-month position
Hours are Monday through Friday
Physical Demands
The Safety Advocate is a physically demanding position. The incumbent must spend the entire time at work standing or walking. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
