What is a school psychologist practicum student?

A School Psychologist Practicum Student is a graduate student who is completing a supervised field experience as part of their training to become a licensed school psychologist. During the practicum, students apply theoretical knowledge in real-world educational settings, working with children, teachers, and parents under the supervision of a certified school psychologist. Their responsibilities typically include conducting assessments, assisting with interventions, and participating in meetings to support students' academic, behavioral, and emotional needs. The practicum experience helps students develop professional skills and gain hands-on experience before advancing to an internship or full-time role.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a school psychologist practicum student?

To thrive as a School Psychologist Practicum Student, you need foundational knowledge in educational and psychological assessment, consultation, and intervention, typically supported by graduate coursework in school psychology. Familiarity with assessment tools (e.g., WISC-V, BASC-3), data management systems, and adherence to ethical guidelines is important. Strong communication, cultural competency, and collaborative skills help build trust with students, families, and educational staff. These skills are crucial for effective assessment, intervention, and supporting students' learning and well-being in diverse educational environments.

What types of support and supervision can a school psychologist practicum student expect during their placement?
