Keep a portfolio of sample assessments and intervention reports to show your skills. Obtain letters of recommendation from qualified individuals. You need a patient attitude, active listening skills, and excellent communication skills. You should also look into acquiring professional malpractice insurance to avoid potential lawsuits. What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a School Psychologist Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a School Psychologist Intern, you need a solid understanding of psychological assessment, counseling techniques, and educational psychology, typically supported by enrollment in a relevant graduate program and supervised practicum experience. Familiarity with assessment tools like WISC-V, behavioral rating scales, and student information systems is essential. As a School Psychologist Intern, you will typically receive supervision from a licensed or credentialed school psychologist who will guide your professional development through regular meetings, feedback, and observation. Many internship programs also provide opportunities to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including teachers, counselors, and administrators, offering a supportive environment to apply your skills. You can expect structured support such as case consultations, participation in team meetings, and access to relevant resources to ensure your growth and adherence to ethical standards. This collaborative and supervised setting helps interns build confidence and competence in delivering psychological services in a school context.
