Position Summary:
Working under the direction of the Chair of the Physics/Trottier Space Institute Outreach Committee, the four positions will be a part of the Outreach Committee and help organize various events. In addition, the Outreach Coordinators will perform functions directly relevant to the management and organization of the activities of four key programs. The four programs are as follows:
Public Lecture Series: this program establishes monthly seminars in the physical sciences (physics- and astronomy-related) for the public. The Public Lecture Series Coordinator will:seek out high profile speakers from the scientific community, establish a schedule of monthly seminars, organize outreach volunteers to coordinate with the public prior to, during and after each lecture, conduct regular surveys regarding the lecture series to continuously update and improve the lectures to make them relevant to and of interest to the public.
Science in Space: this is a collaboration with Dell's Girls Who Game program and introduces girls and underrepresented gender students (grades 5-6) to astrophysics by building a telescope in the computer environment of Minecraft. The Science in Space Coordinator will:help to develop materials, recruit and train volunteer mentors, organize the program to run at elementary schools in Montreal by reaching out to and coordinating with principals and teachers, lead sessions in the classroom.
McGill Physics Hackathon: this is an annual event in which ~200 students (high school, CEGEP, undergraduate) from the Montreal area participate in a 48-hour computational hackathon. Student teams compete to develop solutions to physics-related problems and questions using numerous resources provided for them. The Hackathon Coordinator will:lead a committee to organize the hackathon, which includes scheduling, venue selection, catering, sponsorship, advertising and social media presence, award provision, judging provision and general coordination of event volunteers that are needed to run the event, and will be the key responsible person at the event
Space Explorers: this program brings fun, hands-on, inquiry-based physics activities to elementary school classrooms. Pairs of physicists visit local primary schools 3-4 times over the course of the school year, bringing along a different activity on each hour-long visit. The Space Explorers Coordinator will:recruit, communicate with, and train volunteers to deliver the program in schoolscoordinate with schools and teachers to schedule visits schedule volunteers to visit schools lead school visitswhile training volunteers or if volunteers cancel.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Organizes all aspects of the program including multiple events.
Conceives of series theme for a year; drafting and circulating concept notes.
Collaborates on program communications, posters, and publicity; updates web content and readings for each seminar; compiles program materials.
Coordinates panelists, moderators, and event reporters.
Collaborates with Centre Program Coordinator on all program and event logistics and handling event-day organization and logistics; arranging audio-visual support.

Experience and education:
BSc or higher degree in Physics an asset
