While both roles involve operating buses, a School Bus Driver is specifically trained and licensed to transport students on school routes, often working for school districts. A Bus Driver may operate various types of buses, including city transit or charter buses, and may not require the same specialized endorsements. The key differences lie in the work environment, required credentials, and employer type.

Can you make a living off of being a school bus driver?

School bus drivers typically earn a moderate income that may not be sufficient as a sole source of living expenses, especially in areas with lower wages. Many drivers supplement their income through additional routes, overtime, or part-time work, and certification or training can impact earning potential. Overall, while it can provide a steady income, it often requires additional income sources for a full living wage.

Do school bus drivers get paid for a full day?

School bus drivers are typically paid for the hours they work, which may include morning and afternoon routes, and sometimes additional duties such as bus inspections or training. Whether they receive full-day pay depends on their schedule, employment agreement, and whether they work multiple routes or shifts. Many drivers are paid hourly or by route, and full-day pay is common if they work the entire scheduled hours.

What disqualifies you from being a school bus driver?

School bus driver candidates are typically disqualified if they have a history of serious traffic violations, a criminal record involving violence or drug offenses, or a poor driving record. Additionally, they must pass background checks, drug tests, and a medical exam, and must hold a valid commercial driver's license with passenger and school bus endorsements. Failure to meet these requirements can disqualify a person from becoming a school bus driver.
