Schedule Manager information

What does a schedule manager do?

A Schedule Manager is responsible for creating, maintaining, and optimizing schedules to ensure projects or operations run smoothly and on time. They coordinate with various teams to allocate resources efficiently, monitor progress, and adjust timelines as needed to meet deadlines. Schedule Managers often use specialized software to track tasks and milestones, anticipate potential delays, and communicate changes to stakeholders. Their work is vital in industries such as construction, manufacturing, and event planning, where time management is critical.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a schedule manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Schedule Manager, you need strong organizational abilities, attention to detail, and experience with project management or scheduling, often supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Proficiency in scheduling software like Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, or ERP systems is typically required, along with knowledge of reporting tools. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and time management skills help Schedule Managers coordinate effectively across teams and adapt to changing priorities. These competencies are crucial for ensuring project timelines stay on track and resources are allocated efficiently.

How does a schedule manager typically collaborate with project teams to address last-minute changes or delays?

Schedule Managers play a critical role in maintaining project timelines by closely coordinating with project managers, team leads, and stakeholders. When unexpected changes or delays arise, they facilitate meetings to assess the impact, adjust schedules, and communicate updates to all involved parties. Their ability to quickly analyze dependencies and propose viable alternatives ensures projects stay on track. Effective Schedule Managers also document adjustments and lessons learned to improve future planning processes.

The Opportunity

We're looking for an experienced Senior Project Scheduler to join our Project Controls team in Calgary, AB.

In this role, you will develop and maintain resource-loaded project schedules while supporting planning, forecasting, and project controls across a diverse portfolio of utility and infrastructure projects. You'll work closely with Project Managers, Project Controllers, Estimators, and divisional leaders to deliver accurate schedules, optimize resource planning, and support successful project execution.

If you enjoy building schedules that drive decision-making, balancing priorities across multiple projects, and contributing to complex EPC and capital projects, this role offers meaningful work, collaboration, and opportunities for long-term professional growth.

What You'll Do
  • Develop, baseline, and maintain detailed CPM schedules using Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project from project kickoff through closeout
  • Build resource-loaded schedules and analyze labour, equipment, and subcontractor demand across multiple concurrent projects
  • Define work breakdown structures (WBS), schedule logic, and critical paths aligned with project scope and Phasor's project controls framework
  • Perform schedule updates, prepare schedule narratives, variance analyses, and look-ahead reports for internal and client reporting
  • Assess schedule impacts resulting from scope changes, delays, and project risks, including Time Impact Analyses (TIAs) where required
  • Support earned value management by maintaining schedule data and collaborating with Project Controllers on project performance reporting
  • Coordinate with Project Managers, Estimators, Project Controllers, and divisional leadership to support project planning and resource forecasting
  • Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of scheduling standards, templates, and project controls processes
  • Participate in project handovers, schedule reviews, and PMO planning sessions
  • Mentor Project Controllers and support scheduling best practices across the organization
What We're Looking For
  • 5+ years of hands-on scheduling experience supporting capital, EPC, or complex infrastructure projects
  • Advanced proficiency with Primavera P6 or Microsoft Project, including resource loading, baseline management, and critical path analysis
  • Strong understanding of CPM scheduling principles, WBS development, float management, and schedule change analysis
  • Experience developing resource-loaded schedules and supporting organizational resource planning across multiple projects
  • Experience preparing or supporting Time Impact Analyses (TIAs) and schedule delay analysis
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain scheduling concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Experience in electrical, substation, transmission, or heavy civil/industrial construction is preferred
  • Familiarity with earned value management (SPI, CPI, PMB) and project cost reporting is considered an asset
  • Post-secondary education in engineering technology, construction management, or a related discipline
  • PSP (Planning & Scheduling Professional), PMP, or experience with InEight Control or similar project management platforms is considered an asset
