The Role

We are seeking a skilled Heavy Equipment Operator to safely and efficiently operate a variety of machinery for sports field projects. You will be responsible for precise digging, grading, and material handling while strictly adhering to site safety protocols and GPS- and laser-guided specifications. You would also need to assist with work, pipe laying, and miscellaneous tasks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Machine Operation: Operate heavy machinery, including excavators, bulldozers, backhoes, loaders, and rollers for trenching, loading, and site leveling.
  • Precision Grading: Execute fine grading tasks to meet project elevation and slope requirements, often using UTS-integrated systems/laser systems.
  • Daily Maintenance: Perform pre-shift inspections, grease machines, check fluid levels, and report mechanical issues to the superintendent.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintain a high level of situational awareness to avoid underground utilities, overhead lines, and personnel on the ground.
  • Crew Coordination: Communicate via radio or hand signals with spotters and laborers to ensure safe and accurate material placement.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to climb in and out of large cabs and sit for extended periods.
  • Tolerance for high-vibration environments and exposure to dust, noise, and outdoor elements.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs and work in direct sun/outdoor conditions for extended periods.
  • High level of manual dexterity for detailed tasks.
  • Be able to operate equipment in a safe and efficient manner and perform pre-operation checks on equipment according to state and federal rules and regulations;
  • Must be able to work 50-60 hour weeks outdoors (employees receive overtime pay according state and federal law);
  • Be able to communicate with foreman and follow instructions;
  • Demonstrate reliability, responsibility, and cooperation in team settings;
  • Be willing to travel extensively;
  • Be willing to submit to post-offer, pre-employment substance abuse testing as part of the SCG drug-free workplace;
  • Pass a DOT physical inspection prior to operating company equipment.

Qualifications

  • Experience: 3–5 years of experience operating heavy equipment in a civil or dirt-moving environment.
  • Certifications: Valid driver’s license
  • Skills: Strong understanding of soil types, compaction, and trench safety (sloping/shoring).
