Substation Project Engineer

Location: MI, and other States

Job Summary:
FindTalent is seeking an experienced and motivated Substation Project Engineer on behalf of our client. In this dynamic role, you will collaborate with lead engineers and account managers to deliver high-quality solutions for power delivery services. You will be responsible for the engineering design, project management, and quality assurance of substation projects. Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and/or perform substation physical electrical design, including general arrangements, electrical plans, grounding, raceway layouts, shielding, and lighting for high voltage (HV) and extra-high voltage (EHV) projects.

  • Design protection and control systems, including relay one-lines, AC/DC schematics, metering, SCADA, communications, automation, and security systems.

  • Conduct and oversee engineering calculations and studies, including bus spans, conduit fill, AC/DC system loading, and grounding.

  • Apply industry standards, safety codes, and regulatory requirements to ensure compliance.

  • Develop equipment specifications, material lists, construction details, and testing and commissioning plans.

  • Perform quality control (QC) reviews and lead QC meetings for engineering deliverables.

  • Provide technical leadership, mentorship, and support to project teams.

  • Coordinate with project managers to deliver projects on time and within budget.

  • Act as a client point of contact, addressing project-related issues and ensuring satisfaction.

  • Conduct site visits and evaluations, providing recommendations for upgrades or replacements.

  • Prepare proposals, technical documentation, and comprehensive scopes of work.

  • Create and manage project schedules using tools such as MS Project or Primavera.

  • Deliver technical training and professional mentorship to junior staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related field.

  • 4+ years of relevant experience in substation engineering.

  • Prior experience as a lead engineer, including QC reviews and mentoring.

  • Strong understanding of power systems, substation design principles, and utility grid operations.

  • Familiarity with industry standards (NEC, NESC, NEMA, IEEE/ANSI).

  • Proficiency in engineering analysis and design tools.

  • Strong organizational, communication, and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to travel up to 15%.

Preferred Skills:

  • Registered Professional Engineer (PE) certification.

  • Experience with engineering software such as SKM, ASPEN, ETAP, or CDEGS.

  • Active membership in industry organizations (e.g., IEEE, PES).

  • Construction support experience.
