What is a Scada Cyber Security?

A SCADA Cyber Security job focuses on protecting industrial control systems (ICS) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) networks from cyber threats. Professionals in this field assess vulnerabilities, implement security measures, and monitor systems for potential attacks. They ensure compliance with industry standards and work to prevent disruptions in critical infrastructure like power plants, water systems, and manufacturing facilities. Their role involves risk assessment, incident response, and continuous security improvements to safeguard operational technology (OT) environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Scada Cyber Security position, and why are they important?

To excel in SCADA Cyber Security, you need a solid understanding of industrial control systems (ICS), network security, and risk assessment, often supported by a degree in cybersecurity, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with SCADA-specific tools, intrusion detection systems, and certifications like CISSP, GICSP, or CEH is highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are important soft skills for this role. These abilities are crucial for identifying vulnerabilities, protecting critical infrastructure, and ensuring compliance with security best practices in industrial environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Scada Cyber Security professionals?

SCADA Cyber Security professionals often encounter challenges such as securing legacy systems that were not originally designed with cybersecurity in mind, managing complex networks that blend operational technology (OT) with information technology (IT), and responding quickly to evolving threats. They may need to coordinate with both IT teams and operations personnel to implement security measures without disrupting production. Staying current with ever-changing threat landscapes and regulatory requirements can also be demanding, but overcoming these challenges is critical for safeguarding essential infrastructure and minimizing operational downtime.

Are SCADA cyber security engineers in demand?

SCADA cyber security engineers are in high demand due to the increasing need to protect industrial control systems from cyber threats. Their expertise in securing critical infrastructure, along with skills in network security and familiarity with protocols like Modbus and DNP3, makes them valuable in industries such as energy, manufacturing, and utilities.

The role blends technical expertise in automation and controls with project management, ensuring reliable plant performance, compliance, and integration with energy storage or grid systems.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Manage SCADA systems for energy power plants, including design, configuration, commissioning, and ongoing operations. Oversee real-time monitoring of plant performance, alarms, and remote operations to maximize uptime and efficiency
  • Integration of new renewable assets and facilities into the company’s technological ecosystem. Ensure SCADA systems interface smoothly with inverters, substations, battery energy storage systems (BESS), and grid operators.
  • Supervise, maintain and update SCADA systems, PLCs, RTUs, Relays, RTAC, and other industrial automation devices.
  • Lead the design and configuration of SCADA control rooms
  • Ensure all SCADA assets, networks, and processes comply with NERC CIP standard.
  • Manage corporate networks, servers, backup systems, and cybersecurity infrastructure.
  • Coordinate with the technical support team to ensure the continuous availability of IT systems. Implement software solutions for asset management, maintenance, and data analytics.
  • Oversee both cloud-based and on-premises infrastructure supporting enterprise applications.
  • Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for SCADA system failures or anomalies.
  • Collaborate with operations and maintenance teams to enhance process efficiency.
  • Design secure network architectures connecting IT and OT systems without compromising security.
  • Partner with technology vendors and engineering teams to develop and implement innovative solutions.
  • Travel required 10-20%
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Telecommunications, Electronics, Automation, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in Scada environments, preferably within the renewable energy sector.
  • Strong knowledge of industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC, DNP3, etc.) and SCADA systems
  • Proven experience in industrial cybersecurity and network management.
  • Familiarity with U.S. cybersecurity standards, including at least: NIST SP 800-82, ISA 99 / IEC 62443, NERC CIP (North American Electric Reliability Corporation – Critical Infrastructure Protection), and ISO/IEC 27001.
