Job description

Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Specialist | Night Shift | De Soto, KS

Overnight shift | Thursday, Friday, Saturday, every other Wednesday | 6:30pm-6:30am

Job Summary

The Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) Specialist supports the implementation, administration, and continuous improvement of workplace safety programs during commissioning and production operations. This role partners with employees, leaders, contractors, and vendors to identify and control hazards, ensure regulatory compliance, investigate incidents, support training and emergency preparedness, and promote a strong safety culture.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement and maintain OHS programs, policies, procedures, records, permits, and compliance documentation.
  • Maintain an active field presence to identify hazards, engage employees, monitor safe work practices, and support incident response.
  • Conduct and support inspections, audits, risk assessments, Process Hazard Analyses (PHA), and Management of Change (MOC) activities.
  • Participate in incident investigations and root cause analyses; develop, track, and verify corrective and preventive actions.
  • Evaluate workplace conditions, equipment, and processes and recommend appropriate hazard controls.
  • Support employee and contractor safety training, onboarding, coaching, and safety engagement.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness, drills, and response activities.
  • Support contractor safety, exposure monitoring, regulatory inspections, and compliance activities.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to reduce risk and drive continuous improvement in safety performance.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, or a related field; relevant experience may substitute for education.
  • 2+ years of OHS experience in manufacturing, industrial, construction, commissioning, or a similarly regulated environment.
  • Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and applicable NFPA, ANSI, NEC, ACGIH, and NIOSH standards/guidance.
  • Experience with workplace inspections, audits, hazard assessments, incident investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Experience developing or delivering safety training and supporting contractor or field safety programs.
  • Experience performing or supporting exposure monitoring for chemical and physical hazards.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple functions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Ability to support emergency response activities outside normal business hours, as needed.
  • Working-level English proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking.

Preferred Qualifications

  • ASP, CSP, or progress toward professional safety certification.
  • OSHA 30-Hour certification.
  • HAZWOPER certification.
  • First Aid/CPR certification.
  • ISO 45001 training or auditing experience.
  • Lockout/Tagout or Electrical Safety training.
  • Respiratory Protection or Fit Testing certification.

Physical & Work Requirements

  • Ability to regularly walk, stand, bend, climb stairs, and work in manufacturing and industrial environments.
  • Ability to occasionally lift or carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to wear required PPE, including respiratory protection, when applicable.
  • Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

PPE Requirements

Required PPE may include safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face protection, bump cap, Tyvek/protective clothing, and respiratory or full hazmat protection based on work activities and hazards.
