Satellite Telemetry Control Command information

What is satellite telemetry control command?

Satellite Telemetry Control Command refers to the operations and systems used to monitor, control, and manage satellites remotely from Earth. This includes receiving data (telemetry) from satellites about their status and health, sending commands to adjust their functions or orbits, and ensuring they operate properly. Professionals in this field work with specialized software and hardware to maintain communication with satellites and respond to anomalies or mission requirements.

What skills and qualifications are needed for satellite telemetry control command?

To thrive in Satellite Telemetry Control Command, you need a strong background in electrical or aerospace engineering, satellite systems, and data analysis, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with ground control software, satellite communication protocols, and certification in space operations or related areas is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and the ability to work under pressure are crucial soft skills for monitoring and responding to real-time satellite data. These competencies are essential to ensure the safe, reliable operation of satellites and the accuracy of mission-critical data transmission.

What challenges do satellite telemetry control command professionals face and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Satellite Telemetry Control Command often face challenges such as maintaining precise communication with satellites, troubleshooting real-time anomalies, and working within strict timeframes during satellite passes. These challenges require strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. Teamwork and effective communication with engineers and mission planners are essential to quickly resolve issues and ensure mission success. Continuous training and staying updated with the latest technology also help professionals address these challenges effectively.

Job description

Responsibilities
  • Lead cross-segment systems integration across space-to-ground, ground-to-user, and space-to-user interfaces for mission‑critical satellite and ground systems.
  • Develop and execute comprehensive test and verification programs for space, ground, and user segment systems.
  • Manage requirements flow-down and verification for space and ground segment systems, including Interface Control Documents (ICDs), engineering models, simulations, testbeds, and special test equipment.
  • Provide mission assurance and systems engineering support for space-to-ground architecture development in commercial cloud environments (AWS, Azure, or GCP).
  • Analyze and recommend solutions for space-to-ground system architecture, software design, acquisition strategies, operations, and sustainment.
  • Establish modern development practices by implementing Agile and DevSecOps methodologies for space-to-ground system software development.
  • Create integration plans and coordinate across disciplines by developing space-to-ground, space-to-user, and ground-to-user segment integration plans (SIPs), system engineering plans (SEPs), system test and integration plans (STIPs).
  • Support operational testing and evaluation by participating in developmental tests (DT), operational tests (OT), and integrated test events.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Physics, Computer Science, or related technical field
  • 5 years of experience in Test and Evaluation (T&E), verification of space-to-ground or ground-to-user segment interface requirements including systems engineering, and/or operations of space systems, satellites, and/or ground systems infrastructure within the U.S. government agencies and/or aerospace industry
  • Direct experience with space systems (satellite development, ground station operations, mission operations, or space system integration)
  • Understanding of space and/or ground system architecture and satellite operations including orbital mechanics, satellite subsystems (e.g., spacecraft bus, payload), ground system functions (command and control, telemetry and mission data processing, and space-to-ground (or ground-to-user) data links and protocols)
  • Experience with systems (and/or system of systems) integration planning, execution, and test
  • Familiarity with System Integration Plans (SIP), Systems Engineering Plans (SEP), and System Test and Integration Plans (STIP)
  • Experience with the following: systems engineering tools (e.g., Cameo), test management software, simulation environments (STK, Simulink), or scripting languages (Python, MATLAB)
  • Secret clearance required (active clearance preferred, or ability to obtain one)
