What is a SAS software engineer?

A SAS Software Engineer is a technology professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining software applications using SAS (Statistical Analysis System) tools and programming languages. They work with data analytics, statistical modeling, and reporting solutions, often within industries like healthcare, finance, or research. SAS Software Engineers collaborate with data analysts, business stakeholders, and IT teams to create solutions that help organizations make data-driven decisions. Their responsibilities may include data integration, automation of data processes, and ensuring data quality and security. Proficiency in SAS programming and familiarity with databases, SQL, and data visualization tools are essential for this role.

How does a SAS software engineer typically collaborate with data analysts and other stakeholders in a project?

As a SAS Software Engineer, you will frequently work closely with data analysts, business stakeholders, and sometimes database administrators to ensure that data solutions meet project requirements. This collaboration often involves gathering and clarifying requirements, designing efficient data processes, and translating business needs into technical specifications. Regular communication, such as project meetings and code reviews, is essential to ensure alignment and to troubleshoot data or performance issues. Being proactive in sharing progress and addressing challenges helps facilitate smoother workflows and successful project outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAS software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAS Software Engineer, you need a strong background in programming (especially SAS), data analysis, and statistical methods, typically supported by a degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you work efficiently with cross-functional teams and interpret data requirements. These competencies ensure accurate data management, reliable analytics, and successful project delivery in data-driven environments.

Job description

Software Development Engineer in Test (Emerging Careers) - Hybrid, Cary, North Carolina
We're a leader in data and AI. Through our software and services, we inspire customers around the world to transform data into intelligence - and questions into answers.
If you're looking for a dynamic, fulfilling career with flexibility and world-class employee experience, you'll find it here. We're recognized around the world for our inclusive, meaningful culture and innovative technologies by organizations like Fast Company, Forbes, Newsweek and more.
About the job
The Cloud Data Exchange (CDE) team is looking for a Software Development Engineer in Test (Emerging Careers) to contribute to our SAS' Viya 4 customer offering. CDE provides SAS customers with the ability to securely and efficiently access their data, wherever it resides. Commonly, customers run SAS analytics from a cloud platform, but their data is often still on premises, behind a firewall. CDE aligns perfectly with SAS analytic environments to reach through firewalls and deliver customer data in real-time to the SAS analytic engines. The CDE team uses modern development practices to provide quality software updates at regular delivery intervals.
This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated engineer to grow their skills in data access technologies while working alongside experienced developers. You'll collaborate with teams across SAS to solve technical problems throughout the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC)-from design and implementation through testing and deployment.
As a Software Development Engineer in Test (Emerging Careers), you will:
  • Create and maintain high quality of test automation using modern development techniques and provide key data points to support metrics-based decision making.
  • Apply automated tests at every layer of the application stack, both inside and outside of the continuous delivery pipeline.
  • Produce and analyze metrics that illustrate the quality of applications and develop insight that drives the direction of quality engineering.
  • Be encouraged to participate in open-source projects on behalf of SAS.
  • Work with team to promptly triage test failures with precision and accuracy, maintaining the health of the build pipeline.
  • Work collaboratively with development, product, operations, and support peers to encourage quality, as a key design element in all work efforts.
  • Protect users from escaped defects, participate in support escalations, and value Customer Experience (CX) above all.
  • Ensure all applicable security policies and processes are followed to support the organization's secure software development goals.
  • Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.

Required qualifications
  • A bachelor's degree in computer science or a related quantitative field.
  • 0-2 years of experience writing software applications, testing software, and / or general programming.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Python and Unix shell script.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in a Kubernetes environment using CLIs.
  • Familiarity with database concepts such as cursors and transactions.
  • Familiarity with RESTful APIs and HTML.
  • Familiarity with Jira and Confluence.
  • Proficiency with source control management techniques (Git) including branching, code review, and merging.
  • Familiarity with at least one public cloud interface: Azure, AWS, or GCP.
  • Familiarity with Kubernetes architecture and principles.
  • Exposure to CI/CD tools such as GitHub, Jenkins or Gradle.
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

Additional competencies, knowledge and skills
  • Familiarity in C and Go languages.
  • Exposure to security scanning tools (e.g. Snyk, Klocwork, ZAP).
  • Communication: Conveying information and ideas clearly and concisely to individuals or groups in an engaging manner.
  • Technology Savvy: Leveraging one's practical knowledge and understanding of recent technology tools, solutions, and trends.
  • Quality Oriented: Accomplishing tasks by considering all areas involved, no matter how detailed; showing concern for all aspects of the job.
  • Experience with unit testing and test-driven development.

World-class benefits
Highlights include...
  • Comprehensive medical, prescription, dental and vision plans.
  • Medical plan options include:
    • PPO with low annual deductible and copays.
    • HDHP combined with a health savings account with a contribution from SAS (no access to on-site health care center).
  • Onsite Health Care Center (HQ) that's free to employees and family members enrolled in the PPO plan. There's a pharmacy too! Not local to HQ? The pharmacy will ship prescriptions for no additional charge!
  • An industry-leading 401k plan.
  • Tuition Assistance Program and programs and resources to support your development
  • Generous time away including vacation time, a variety of paid holidays, and our much-loved U.S. Winter Wellness Break between December 25 and January 1.
  • Volunteer Time Off, parental leave and unlimited paid sick days.
  • Generous childcare benefits for all full-time employees.

You are welcome here.
At SAS, it's not about fitting into our culture - it's about adding to it. We believe our people make the difference. Our inclusive workforce brings together unique talents and inspires teams to create amazing software that reflects the diversity of our users and customers.
