What is a SAP HANA developer?

A SAP HANA Developer is an IT professional who specializes in designing, developing, and maintaining applications on the SAP HANA platform. They work with in-memory database technology to create data models, write complex queries, and optimize performance for enterprise solutions. Their role often includes developing stored procedures, data integration, and supporting real-time analytics for business processes. SAP HANA Developers typically collaborate with other SAP specialists to ensure seamless integration with existing systems. They need strong knowledge of SQL, data modeling, and SAP HANA architecture.

What does a SAP HANA developer do?

As an SAP HANA developer, you design and develop tools that can be used to conduct an analysis of information in a database. In this role, you may determine the best way to implement analytics software, maintain data models, collaborate with business teams to ensure your software meets alignment requirements, and produce innovative solutions as needed to keep things on track. SAP HANA developers often troubleshoot tuning problems, communicate model designs to peers and customers, and maintain detailed documentation for SAP HANA systems so other people can understand their functions. This is often a collaborative role, so the ability to program in concert with other developers is essential to success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAP HANA developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAP HANA Developer, you need strong knowledge of database design, SQL scripting, and data modeling, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with SAP HANA Studio, SAP BW, and certifications such as SAP Certified Development Associate are highly valuable. Analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications enable developers to design optimized data solutions, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and collaborate seamlessly within project teams.

What are some common challenges a SAP HANA developer might face when working with large-scale data migrations?

SAP HANA Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring data accuracy and integrity during migrations, optimizing data load performance, and managing system downtime to minimize business disruption. Handling complex data transformations and integrating data from multiple legacy systems can also be demanding. Effective collaboration with business analysts, database administrators, and project managers is essential to address these challenges and ensure successful migrations.

Job description

About Rivian

Rivian is on a mission to keep the world adventurous forever. This goes for the emissions-free Electric Adventure Vehicles we build, and the curious, courageous souls we seek to attract.

As a company, we constantly challenge what’s possible, never simply accepting what has always been done. We reframe old problems, seek new solutions and operate comfortably in areas that are unknown. Our backgrounds are diverse, but our team shares a love of the outdoors and a desire to protect it for future generations.

Role Summary

We are looking for an advanced Staff, SAP Basis Platform Engineer to help lead our transition from traditional server management to engineering intelligent, automated, and AI-driven SAP platforms in the cloud, with a primary focus on driving our SAP S/4HANA ecosystem. In this role, you will operate with limited supervision, focusing on high-level objectives to develop and execute strategies that exceed goals within the Basis function while contributing to broader, cross-functional business goals. You will act as a key influencer and change agent, making compelling cases for modernization and securing stakeholder buy-in to shape the future of our SAP landscape. This role will be located in Atlanta, GA and will report to our Sr. Manager, ERP Platform.

Responsibilities
  • Architecture & Project Leadership: Lead complex modernization projects and design modern SAP landscapes, executing successful SAP S/4HANA upgrades (e.g., release and database upgrades), and migrations to RISE with SAP and SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP).
  • Automation & Orchestration: Champion the shift from traditional SAP operations to proactive platform engineering by transitioning manual tasks (system copies, transports, reactive support) to automated, self-healing workflows using Infrastructure as Code (IaC) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Observability & AI-Driven Operations: Implement full-stack SAP observability, AIOps, predictive alerts, and root cause analysis tools to move from reactive troubleshooting to predictive system health management for the digital core.
  • Independent Execution & Accountability: Work effectively with minimal supervision to improve functional deliverables. Systematically track project progress, rigorously enforce architectural standards, and ensure the strategic health and scalability of high-availability enterprise systems.
  • Security & Zero Trust: Integrate "Secure by Design" principles, ensuring Zero Trust architecture, strict compliance, identity & access management, and robust data protection across all hybrid and cloud platforms.
  • Change Management & Collaboration: Drive alignment across diverse technical and business stakeholders. Make compelling cases for change, secure early buy-in, and bridge the gaps between traditional IT and modern DevOps mindsets by actively understanding different perspectives and resolving conflicts.

Qualifications
  • Deep SAP Expertise: Possesses advanced, deep expertise in SAP Basis and understands its domain relevance to solving complex business problems. Must have proven experience leading enterprise-level SAP S/4HANA initiatives, executing complex system upgrades, and providing hands-on leadership in RISE with SAP migrations.
  • Platform Engineer Mindset: A forward-thinking approach focused on architecture, cloud orchestration, innovation, and business alignment rather than traditional server and DB maintenance.
Technical Competencies
  • SAP Technologies: Deep architectural and operational knowledge of SAP S/4HANA, SAP HANA databases, RISE with SAP migration methodologies and operational frameworks, and SAP BTP Administration.
  • Cloud Platforms: Strong hands-on experience with hyperscalers hosting SAP environments (AWS, Microsoft Azure, and/or Google Cloud).
  • Certifications: Relevant SAP Certifications (e.g., SAP S/4HANA, SAP BTP) and Cloud Certifications (AWS or GCP) are highly preferred.
  • SAP Observability & Monitoring: Proven experience establishing end-to-end SAP observability using advanced APM, distributed tracing, and AI-driven monitoring tools (e.g., SAP Cloud ALM, Datadog, Dynatrace, AppDynamics) tailored for complex HANA environments.
  • Automation & Scripting: Proficiency in modern automation tools (Ansible, Terraform) and scripting languages (Python, PowerShell).
  • Modern Infrastructure: Solid understanding of Linux systems, containerization (Docker), Kubernetes, and modern OS/Middleware integration.
