Distinguishing Features of the Class
Incumbents to a position in this class performs moderately difficult technical work of an engineering nature in the design, investigation, analysis, development, construction, maintenance, operation or inspection of sanitary engineering projects and programs. Incumbents must have the ability to be trained in utilizing the computer-operated drafting/design (CADD) equipment in the preparation of contract plans relating to sanitary engineering projects. Work involves the responsibility for the application of sanitary engineering principles to a variety of problems. The Assistant Sanitary Engineer may be in charge of projects in the field, supervise particular engineering activities in the office, or be engaged in a special phase of sanitary engineering investigation or research. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Senior Sanitary Engineer who may be turned to for advice on the more difficult and technical problems. Supervision may be exercised over Junior Sanitary Engineers and Engineering Aides.
Examples of work (Illustration Only)
Assists in the preparation of sewers, sewage treatment plant and sanitary pump station plans, specifications and design of proposed engineering projects;
Directs the activities of the construction field survey units, organizes survey parties, and assign and lays out work for them;
Prepares specifications for materials and minor construction jobs;
Conducts and prepares reports on the efficiency of new equipment;
Conducts tests on the performance of new equipment or installations;
Prepares or assists in the preparation of cost estimates and time schedules for sanitary sewers, pump stations and sewage treatment plant construction projects;
Lays out, supervises and reviews the work of a unit engaged in a particular phase of engineering activities;
Performs difficult design work for the alteration and extension of existing sewer systems;
Performs computer aided drafting/design functions using AUTOCAD in the preparation of engineering plans;
Performs related duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications
Promotional
(A) Continuous and permanent status as a Junior Sanitary Engineer in the Buffalo Sewer Authority for one year;
OR
(B) Continuous and permanent status as a Senior Drafting Technician or Sewer Construction Inspector in the Buffalo Sewer Authority for one year.
In addition, all applicants qualifying under (B)must have two years of full-time experience in engineering work.
Open Competitive
(A) Bachelors Degree from an accredited college or university in Civil, Environmental, Mechanical or Sanitary Engineering and two years of full-time experience in engineering work;
OR
(B) Associates Degree from an accredited college, university or technical institute in Civil Engineering Technology, Mechanical Technology or Engineering Science and four years of full-time engineering experience.
OR
(C) An equivalent combination as defined within the limits of (A) and (B).
EQUIVALENT COMBINATIONS
Masters Degree from an accredited college or university in Engineering may be substituted for the above requirements.
APPROVED AREAS OF ENGINEERING WORK EXPERIENCE
Design, construction, investigation, inspection, analysis, development, maintenance or operation of engineering programs and/or projects in areas of:
(1) Sanitary Engineering
(2) Sewers, Sewage Treatment Plants, Pumping Stations
(3) Related structures are defined as catch basins, tunnel work, receivers, excavations, chambers, wires, etc.

Surveying including computations, engineering estimates and specifications;
Ability to plan and supervise the work of others;
Ability to be trained in the computer operated design/drafting and AUTOCAD equipment;
Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
