What is a SAN Storage engineer?

SAN Storage Engineers are IT professionals who design, implement, manage, and troubleshoot Storage Area Networks (SANs) within an organization. Their main role is to ensure reliable, efficient, and secure storage solutions that support the organization's data needs. They work with hardware and software components, monitor storage performance, and handle data backup and disaster recovery strategies. SAN Storage Engineers also collaborate with other IT teams to integrate storage systems with servers and applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAN Storage engineer?

To thrive as a SAN Storage Engineer, you need in-depth knowledge of storage area networking concepts, storage protocols (like Fibre Channel and iSCSI), and a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Familiarity with major SAN hardware (such as Dell EMC, NetApp, or HPE) and management tools, as well as industry certifications like CompTIA Storage+ or vendor-specific credentials, is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you excel in troubleshooting and collaborating with IT teams. These skills and qualifications are crucial for ensuring data availability, system performance, and secure storage operations within an organization.

What are the typical collaboration points between a SAN Storage engineer and other IT teams?

As a SAN Storage Engineer, you'll regularly collaborate with system administrators, database administrators, and network engineers to ensure seamless data storage, backup, and recovery processes. You may also work closely with security teams to maintain compliance and protect data integrity. Effective communication and coordination are essential, as your work often impacts the performance and availability of critical applications across the organization.

Job description

Systems Engineer (ESS-ESC)

Systems Engineer to lead the design, implementation, and management of our enterprise storage and virtualization environment. This role focuses heavily on Dell PowerScale (Isilon) and SAN technologies, ensuring high availability and performance for critical data services.

Core Responsibilities

  • Primary Storage Management: Act as the subject matter expert for our Isilon/PowerScale clusters, overseeing capacity reporting, performance tuning, and Zero Trust security protocols.
  • SAN Operations: Manage and scale enterprise SAN storage arrays, including provisioning, LUN masking, and hardware lifecycle management.
  • Fabric Engineering: Maintain and optimize the SAN Fiber Channel fabric, including switch configuration, zoning, and troubleshooting physical layer connectivity.
  • Virtualization Support: Provide secondary administration for the VMware environment, ensuring seamless integration between compute clusters and backend storage.
  • Data Protection: Oversee backup and recovery operations, utilizing enterprise tools to ensure data integrity and meeting strict RTO/RPO requirements.

Technical Qualifications

  • Expertise: Deep technical knowledge of OneFS, Isilon nodes, and enterprise-grade SAN arrays.
  • Connectivity: Hands-on experience with Fiber Channel (FC) switches (Brocade) and complex zoning configurations.
  • Virtualization: Proficiency in vSphere/ESXi management, specifically regarding storage multipathing and datastore optimization.
  • Monitoring: Experience generating detailed capacity and health reports to drive infrastructure planning and budgeting.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience with Rubrik or similar Zero Trust data security platforms.
  • Knowledge of automation/scripting for storage provisioning.
  • Relevant industry certifications (e.g., Dell EMC Specialist, VCP).
