Common Search/ComparisonSampling vs Data Analyst

Sampling involves selecting a subset of data or population for analysis, often requiring specific techniques and fieldwork. Data analysts interpret and visualize data collected from various sources, focusing on insights and reporting. While sampling is a method used within data analysis, the roles differ in scope and responsibilities, with sampling being a specialized skill within the broader data analysis field.

What does a Sampling job involve?

A Sampling job typically involves collecting samples of materials, products, or data for analysis or quality control purposes. This role can be found in industries like manufacturing, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, environmental science, and market research. The main responsibilities include following protocols to ensure representative and uncontaminated samples, accurately labeling and recording data, and sometimes preparing samples for laboratory testing. Attention to detail and adherence to safety and quality standards are crucial in this position.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sampling Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sampling Technician, you need a strong understanding of laboratory procedures, quality control, and sample collection techniques, often supported by a degree in environmental science, chemistry, or a related field. Familiarity with tools such as sampling equipment, data logging software, and laboratory information management systems (LIMS) is typically required. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication are essential soft skills for maintaining sample integrity and accurate reporting. These competencies ensure precise data collection and contribute to reliable analysis, which is critical for regulatory compliance and decision-making.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in sampling roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals working in sampling often encounter challenges such as ensuring sample representativeness, adhering to strict timelines, and maintaining quality standards. Coordinating with other departments, such as production or quality control, can help ensure that samples are collected and handled correctly. Staying organized, following established protocols, and communicating clearly with team members are key strategies for overcoming these challenges. Continuous training and attention to detail are also vital for success in this role.

We are looking for:

Lab Technician who is responsible for the safe operation, routine maintenance, and basic troubleshooting of accelerated weathering machines, convection ovens, and gas fading chambers. The role also manages sample intake (login), scheduling, and timely removal at required exposure intervals, ensuring accurate documentation and traceability.

We can count on you to:

  • Operate and monitor convection ovens and gas fading chambers to specified conditions (temperature, humidity, gas concentration, exposure time).

  • Prepare equipment for runs (set-up, calibration checks, lamp/filter changes as applicable, pre-checks).

  • Monitor tests during operation and respond to alarms or abnormal performance.

Preventive Maintenance & Troubleshooting

  • Perform routine preventive maintenance on weathering machines, filtration systems, ovens, and gas fading chambers per maintenance schedules and SOP guidance.

  • Conduct basic troubleshooting and first-line repairs (e.g., replacing lamps, filters, seals, tubing, sensors where trained/authorized).

  • Maintain equipment uptime through proactive inspection and timely reporting of issues and spare-part needs.

  • Order replacement parts

Filtration System Responsibilities

  • Operate, inspect, and maintain filtration units supporting test equipment (e.g., water quality systems, air filtration, scrubbers where applicable).

  • Replace filters and consumables, verify flow/pressure parameters, and record results per SOPs.

Sample Handling, Scheduling & Documentation

  • Receive, label, and log samples into the tracking system (approved logs), ensuring chain-of-custody and traceability.

  • Load/unload samples per required intervals and test schedules; ensure correct rack placement and exposure orientation.

  • Record exposure start/stop times, interim pulls, deviations, and observations (e.g., discoloration, cracking, warpage).

  • Package and stage removed samples for further testing, analysis, or shipment per instructions.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Follow all EHS requirements for UV exposure, hot surfaces, compressed gases, and chemical handling relevant to gas fading and filtration systems.

  • Ensure tests are performed in accordance with internal procedures and applicable standards (e.g., ISO/ASTM) as assigned.

  • Maintain clean, organized work areas (5S), including proper waste disposal and housekeeping.

  • Support audits, inspections, and continuous improvement activities (IMS, SOP updates, risk assessments).

You can count on us for:

You will bring:

  • Technical diploma, vocational training, or equivalent experience in mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, or laboratory operations.

  • 5+ years of hands-on experience operating and/or maintaining laboratory or industrial test equipment (weathering equipment experience preferred).

  • Comfortable working with mechanical systems, basic electrical components, and instrumentation (temperature, humidity, flow, pressure).

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow SOPs and maintain accurate records.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with accelerated weathering equipment (e.g., Xenon Arc, QUV, QSun, temperature/humidity cycling).

  • Familiarity with sample tracking systems, and test documentation in regulated/quality environments.

  • Understanding of relevant test standards (ASTM/ISO) for weathering and color fastness/gas fading.

  • Basic calibration knowledge and experience working with service providers/OEM technicians.

Key Skills & Competencies

  • Preventive maintenance mindset; practical troubleshooting and problem-solving.

  • Strong organizational skills for sample scheduling and interval pulls.

  • Safety-focused behavior, especially around high temperatures, UV light, and gases.

  • Clear communication with engineers/scientists, maintenance, and operations teams.

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tests concurrently.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

  • Work in laboratory and equipment rooms with noise, heat, and UV sources; require PPE (safety glasses, gloves, safety shoes, hearing protection).

  • Handling racks/samples and lifting moderate loads as needed.

You will get:

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.

  • The U.S. base hourly rate reasonably expected to be paid for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hour.  Since actual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted base salary range.
