Gibson McIlvain is more than just materials and with our comprehensive architectural millwork facility, we offer custom millwork services from interior trim and cabinetry to exterior siding, pergolas, and furniture.


The Wood Paint Finishing Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all finishing room operations, including scheduling, production, quality control, safety, personnel development, and equipment maintenance. This position ensures that all finished products meet customer specifications, quality standards, and delivery requirements while maintaining efficient production flow and controlling labor and material costs.


Key Responsibilities:


Leadership & Supervision:

  • Lead and supervise all finishing room personnel.
  • Train, mentor, and develop finishing room employees.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching as needed.
  • Promote teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement.

Production Management

  • Plan and coordinate daily finishing room production schedules.
  • Prioritize work orders to meet customer delivery commitments.
  • Monitor workflow and identify bottlenecks that impact production.
  • Coordinate with mill, yard and operations teams to ensure smooth production flow.
  • Maintain accurate production records and performance metrics.

Quality Control

  • Ensure all products meet approved samples, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Approve first-run samples before production begins.
  • Maintain control samples and finishing standards.
  • Investigate quality issues and implement corrective actions.
  • Monitor color consistency, finish quality, and overall product appearance.

Finishing Operations

  • Oversee stain, paint, oil, sealer, and topcoat application processes.
  • Ensure proper mixing and application of finishing products.
  • Monitor material usage and waste.
  • Maintain finishing procedures and SOPs.
  • Support development of new finishes and custom color matching capabilities.

Safety & Equipment

  • Maintain a safe work environment and enforce all company safety policies.
  • Ensure proper handling and storage of finishing materials and chemicals.
  • Oversee maintenance of spray equipment, pumps, booths, and related finishing systems.
  • Coordinate preventative maintenance activities to minimize downtime.

Inventory & Cost Control

  • Monitor inventory levels of stains, coatings, abrasives, and finishing supplies.
  • Reduce waste and improve finishing efficiency.
  • Assist with labor tracking, costing, and margin improvement initiatives.
  • Support continuous improvement efforts to increase productivity and profitability.
Requirements:
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 75 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment.
  • Schedule: Monday - Friday, 6:00a.m. - 3:30p.m.

Job Qualifications


  • 5+ years of finishing/spraying/coating experience.
  • 2+ years of supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong knowledge of stains, paints, oils, sealers, and coating systems.
  • Experience with color matching and custom finishes.
  • Knowledge of spray equipment, finishing booths, and related machinery.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Ability to read work orders, specifications, and production documents.
  • High School Diploma or GED required; additional technical training preferred.
  • Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screening (including marijuana).
