Job description

The Sample Custodian provides clerical and administrative laboratory support for the environmental organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry and biology departments at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Region 10 Laboratory. Handles sensitive equipment, provides support for preparation for short-term storage of upcoming sample analyses. Must have experience storage and retrieval of samples in laboratory settings.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Performs all the different aspects of shipping, receiving, storing, distributing and logging samples.

  • Duties include opening coolers and inspecting contents of shipments, checking documentation to ensure contents of cooler are accurately listed, distributing sample containers to appropriate storage locations, entering the information into a laboratory information management system (LIMS) and organizing spent samples for disposal.

  • The position requires strict adherence to standard operating procedures, health and safety policies and practices, and quality control requirements. Working in this environment requires the use of safety equipment including, but not limited to, eye safety glasses, gloves, and other personal protective equipment.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE

Associates Degree in Physical Sciences or Business and a minimum of three (3) years in an environmental laboratory or HS Diploma with minimum of six (6) years of experience in an environmental laboratory.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is primarily performed in an office or field environment. Regularly required to sit, speak and hear. Frequently required to walk. Required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel and reach with hands and arms. Occasionally required to stand, climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 20 pounds. Able to withstand the rigors of inclement weather to include extreme heat and cold. May be required to carry up to 40 pounds of training equipment. Exposed to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions. Capable of walking long distances over broken ground and may have to remain standing for extended periods of time in order to support training on range operations. Capable of climbing up/down on a variety of military and armored vehicle platforms.
