What is a Samaritans volunteer?

Samaritans are volunteers who provide confidential emotional support to people experiencing feelings of distress, despair, or suicidal thoughts. They operate helplines, email, and sometimes in-person services to listen and offer non-judgmental support, helping individuals find a way forward. Samaritans do not give advice or tell people what to do; instead, they focus on listening and understanding without judgment. Their mission is to reduce feelings of isolation and disconnection that can lead to suicide.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Samaritans volunteer?

To thrive as a Samaritans volunteer, you need strong listening skills, emotional resilience, and a willingness to support people in distress, typically gained through comprehensive in-house training rather than formal qualifications. Familiarity with call-handling systems, confidentiality protocols, and secure messaging platforms is important for day-to-day operations. Compassion, non-judgmental attitude, and the ability to maintain calm under pressure are critical soft skills for supporting vulnerable individuals. These abilities ensure that volunteers can provide effective emotional support and maintain the trust and safety of those reaching out for help.

What emotional challenges do Samaritans volunteers face, and how does the organization support them?

Samaritans volunteers often handle emotionally charged conversations, which can be both rewarding and challenging. Listening to individuals in distress requires empathy and resilience, and it's not uncommon for volunteers to occasionally feel emotionally affected after shifts. To support their well-being, Samaritans provides comprehensive training, regular debriefing sessions, and access to peer and professional support networks. Volunteers are encouraged to share their experiences and seek help when needed, fostering a supportive and understanding team environment.
