What is a salt tax?

A Salt Tax is a government-imposed levy on the production, sale, or consumption of salt. Historically, it has been used by various countries as a source of revenue, most notably in India under British colonial rule, where it became a symbol of colonial oppression. The Salt Tax sparked significant resistance, including the famous Salt March led by Mahatma Gandhi in 1930. Today, salt taxes are rare but may still exist in some regions for revenue or health reasons.

We help clients tackle complex challenges across accounting, financial reporting, transactions, regulatory compliance, and digital transformation. We blend deep technical expertise with a hands-on, entrepreneurial approach to help the world’s leading companies move forward with confidence. We are actively expanding our State & Local Tax (SALT) Services practice and seeking early-career professionals with a passion for helping clients navigate complex state and local tax matters.

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Consultant to support SALT advisory engagements for clients across a variety of industries. Consultants work closely with Managers, Senior Managers, Directors, clients, and external advisors to deliver high-quality state income tax, indirect tax, sales and use tax, and multistate tax advisory services while building meaningful client relationships.

What you might expect:

  • Assist clients with state income tax compliance, tax planning, tax research, and multistate tax reporting requirements.
  • Research and analyze state and local tax laws, regulations, apportionment methodologies, nexus considerations, and filing requirements.
  • Assist with sales and use tax reviews, indirect tax assessments, audit support, controversy matters, and tax process improvement initiatives.
  • Develop client-ready analyses, technical memoranda, tax research, and presentation materials.
  • Support process improvement initiatives and technology implementations related to SALT compliance and indirect tax processes.
  • Collaborate with CFGI professionals, client management, and external advisors to deliver high-quality client service.

What you must have:

  • 2+ years of experience in state and local tax, corporate tax, public accounting, and/or corporate tax consulting, including exposure to SALT engagements.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience at a Big 4 firm (Deloitte, EY, KPMG, or PwC).
  • Experience supporting state income tax, sales and use tax, indirect tax, or multistate tax compliance and advisory engagements.

What sets you apart:

  • Experience applying state income tax, sales and use tax, indirect tax, and multistate tax regulations.
  • Experience conducting tax research related to nexus, apportionment, unitary filing requirements, and other multistate tax issues.
  • Experience supporting tax planning, restructuring, audit defense, reverse audits, or tax controversy engagements.
  • Experience with indirect tax technologies such as Avalara, Vertex, or similar tax automation platforms.
  • Experience supporting process improvement initiatives or tax technology implementations within a corporate or consulting environment.

Nice to have:

  • CPA license, JD, MST, or active progress toward a relevant professional credential.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Business, or a related field.
  • Experience with tax research platforms, tax compliance software, or data analytics tools.
  • Experience supporting clients across multiple industries and jurisdictions.

Who thrives here:

  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate across client and engagement teams.
  • Strong analytical and structured problem-solving abilities.
  • Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Entrepreneurial, self-motivated, adaptable, ethical, and dependable.
  • High energy with a commitment to delivering exceptional client service.
