What is a Salesforce programmer?

A Salesforce Programmer is a software developer who specializes in building, customizing, and maintaining applications on the Salesforce platform. They use programming languages like Apex and Visualforce, as well as Salesforce's declarative tools, to develop solutions that meet business needs. Salesforce Programmers work closely with administrators, analysts, and stakeholders to create, test, and deploy new features or integrations within Salesforce environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Salesforce programmer?

To thrive as a Salesforce Programmer, you need strong programming skills in Apex, Visualforce, and Lightning Components, along with a solid understanding of Salesforce CRM concepts and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with Salesforce development tools like Salesforce DX, integration frameworks, and certifications such as Salesforce Platform Developer I/II are highly valued. Problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are essential soft skills for addressing user needs and collaborating with stakeholders. These skills and qualifications are crucial for building efficient, scalable solutions and ensuring successful Salesforce implementations within organizations.

What are some common challenges Salesforce programmers face when customizing complex workflows, and how can they overcome them?

Salesforce Programmers often encounter challenges when customizing complex workflows, such as managing dependencies between different automation tools (like Process Builder, Flow, and Apex triggers) and ensuring that changes do not inadvertently impact existing business processes. To overcome these challenges, it's important to thoroughly document all customizations, use sandboxes for testing, and collaborate closely with administrators and end users to understand requirements. Regular code reviews and regression testing are also essential to maintain system integrity and prevent conflicts.

About Vacatia

Vacatia is building the future of vacation ownership. We operate in a complex, rapidly evolving industry where technology plays a critical role in how we serve owners, guests, and our business.

Salesforce is at the center of many of Vacatia's most important operations, including ownership records, customer care, billing, and business reporting. We're looking for an Engineering Manager, Salesforce to lead the team responsible for building, improving, and supporting this critical platform.

This is a hands-on leadership role where you'll manage and develop a team of Salesforce engineers and administrators while remaining close to the technology and partnering directly with business leaders to deliver meaningful solutions.

Why You'll Love Working at Vacatia

Lead a Critical Technology Function
Own the team responsible for one of Vacatia's most important business platforms.

Build and Develop Great Teams
Coach, mentor, hire, and develop Salesforce talent while creating a high-performing engineering culture.

Stay Close to the Technology
Remain hands-on with real engineering work while helping set technical priorities and raise the engineering bar across the team.

Drive Business Impact
Partner with Customer Care, Operations, Finance, Product, and leadership to turn complex business needs into scalable Salesforce solutions.

Create Predictable Delivery
Help the team improve planning, prioritization, accountability, and delivery while reducing technical debt and improving platform reliability.

Your Impact

  • Lead and develop a team of Salesforce engineers and administrators through coaching, performance management, career development, hiring, and onboarding
  • Partner with the Platform Operations Manager and Salesforce Technical Architect to prioritize work, manage capacity, and deliver predictable outcomes
  • Remain hands-on by contributing to approximately 25% of a normal engineering cycle
  • Partner with business stakeholders to translate complex needs into practical, scalable Salesforce solutions
  • Champion engineering best practices including code review, testing, source-driven development, and documentation
  • Help improve platform reliability, reduce technical debt, and strengthen engineering practices across the team
  • Serve as an escalation point for incidents and support blameless postmortems and continuous improvement
  • Ensure work is appropriately captured, prioritized, and visible across the team

What You Bring

  • 7+ years of professional software engineering experience, including hands-on development
  • 4+ years of experience managing Salesforce engineering teams, including developers and/or administrators
  • Deep Salesforce expertise across Apex, SOQL, Lightning Web Components, Flow, security and sharing, governor limits, and the Salesforce data model
  • Strong experience with Salesforce DevOps, including SFDX, Git, source-driven development, CI/CD, sandbox strategy, and automated testing
  • Proven ability to translate business requirements into technical solutions and communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Strong leadership, coaching, communication, and organizational skills
  • Ability to balance hands-on technical contribution with people leadership and team development

Nice to Have

  • Experience in hospitality, travel, timeshare, vacation ownership, or reservation-based businesses
  • Experience with Salesforce Service Cloud, Experience Cloud, or Marketing Cloud
  • Familiarity with Linear or similar project management tools
  • Experience introducing AI-assisted development tools into engineering teams

Join Us

Join Vacatia and lead the team responsible for one of the most important technology platforms in our business. As our Engineering Manager, Salesforce, you'll have the opportunity to develop talented engineers, strengthen our Salesforce platform, and build technology solutions that directly impact customers and business operations.

If you're a Salesforce engineering leader who loves developing people, solving complex problems, and creating high-performing teams, we'd love to hear from you.
