Sales Performance Consulting information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Sales Performance Consultant, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Performance Consultant, you need expertise in sales strategy, business analytics, and a background in business, sales, or consulting, often supported by a relevant degree or certifications such as Certified Professional Sales Leader (CPSL). Familiarity with CRM platforms, sales enablement tools, and data analysis software is typically required. Strong communication, problem-solving, and relationship-building skills help consultants effectively influence change and drive results within client organizations. These skills and qualifications are vital to diagnosing sales challenges, implementing effective solutions, and delivering measurable improvements in sales performance.

Do sales consultants get paid hourly?

Sales performance consulting roles typically do not pay hourly; instead, consultants often earn a combination of base salary and performance-based commissions or bonuses. Compensation structures vary by employer and may include project-based fees or retainer agreements, especially for independent consultants or firms. Hourly pay is less common in this field, which emphasizes results and client outcomes.

What does a sales performance consultant do?

A sales performance consultant analyzes and improves a company's sales processes, strategies, and team performance. They often use data analysis, training, and coaching to help sales teams meet targets and increase revenue, typically working with CRM tools and sales metrics. Their role involves identifying gaps, developing solutions, and implementing best practices to optimize sales effectiveness.

What is the difference between Sales Performance Consulting vs Sales Operations?

Employer & Industry UsageConsulting firms, large corporations across industriesCompanies with dedicated sales teams in various industries
Search & Comparison IntentUnderstanding consulting services to improve sales performanceOptimizing internal sales processes and systems

Sales Performance Consulting focuses on advising organizations to enhance sales strategies and outcomes through expert analysis and tailored solutions. In contrast, Sales Operations manages the internal processes, systems, and data that support the sales team’s efficiency. Both roles are vital but serve different functions within the sales ecosystem.

Is 30 too old to get into consulting?

Sales Performance Consulting is a field that values experience and industry knowledge, and age is generally not a barrier to entry. Many professionals transition into consulting roles later in their careers, leveraging skills such as data analysis, communication, and strategic planning. Success depends more on relevant skills, certifications, and networking than on age.

What is sales performance consulting?

Sales performance consulting is a service provided by experts who help organizations improve their sales effectiveness and achieve better results. Consultants analyze existing sales processes, identify areas for improvement, and recommend strategies such as training, process optimization, and technology integration. Their goal is to increase sales productivity, enhance team performance, and drive revenue growth. They may also assist with change management and the implementation of best practices across the sales organization.

Is 100 an hour good for consulting?

For a sales performance consulting role, earning $100 an hour is generally considered competitive, especially for experienced consultants with specialized skills or certifications. Rates can vary based on industry, location, and the complexity of the project, but this rate aligns with mid to senior-level consulting fees in the field.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in Sales Performance Consulting, and how can they be addressed?

Sales Performance Consultants often encounter challenges such as resistance to change from sales teams, aligning diverse stakeholder expectations, and accurately measuring the impact of their recommendations. Overcoming these obstacles typically involves strong communication skills, fostering trust through transparency, and using data-driven insights to demonstrate value. Collaborating closely with sales leaders and regularly providing actionable feedback can help ensure successful implementation of new strategies and sustained performance improvements.

We're also committed to providing transformational opportunities for our own employees by investing in their growth. Job Description
This role will be based in NYC, Chicago, Omaha, SF, or Sunnyvale/Mountain View.
At LinkedIn, our approach to flexible work is centered on trust and optimized for culture, connection, clarity, and the evolving needs of our business. The work location of this role is hybrid, meaning it will be performed both from home and from a LinkedIn office on select days, as determined by the business needs of the team.
This role is ideal for someone who's passionate about closing skill gaps and skilled at driving process improvement. We are looking for a Senior Sales Performance Consultant to partner with global Deal Desk leadership and collaborate closely with Sales Operations, Pricing, Finance, Legal, and our Global Sales Enablement teams to deliver skill development and process optimization initiatives that accelerate deal velocity and improve business results.
As a Senior Sales Performance Consultant supporting the global Deal Desk organization, you will identify friction in the deal lifecycle and recommend ways to streamline quoting, pricing, approvals, and deal structuring. You are highly attuned to the Deal Desk organization's strategy and goals, acting as an extension of its leadership team. Using both qualitative and quantitative analysis, you'll uncover skill gaps, process bottlenecks, and technology needs across the quote-to-close motion. With these insights, you'll create strategic skill-building and process-improvement plans - partnering with a dedicated Enablement lead to build out larger-scale programming while remaining hands-on enough to build and deliver solutions yourself - to help the team close deals faster, more accurately, and with less rework.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Serve as a key business partner to Deal Desk senior leaders to identify and solve knowledge, skill, and operational problems
  • Conduct data-driven analysis of the deal lifecycle to uncover knowledge, skill, process, and technology gaps that slow down or add risk to deal execution
  • Plan and execute skill-development and process-optimization strategy that delivers measurable improvements in deal cycle time, quote accuracy, approval efficiency, and compliance
  • Partner with a dedicated Enablement lead to build larger-scale programming, while independently designing, building, and delivering enablement solutions - training, playbooks, workshops, job aids, and reinforcement content - that close skill gaps and drive process adoption
  • Measure skill-building effectiveness and enablement ROI in partnership with Sales Operations and Finance
  • Influence stakeholders to close skill gaps, adopt standardized and optimized deal processes, and use feedback loops to drive continuous improvement and reinforcement
  • Collaborate with multiple senior stakeholders across Sales, Pricing, Operations, Finance, and Legal, and build coalitions of executive sponsors
  • Innovate using enablement and workflow technology to monitor knowledge and skill gaps, surface friction points, and drive learning reinforcement
  • Drive change management by securing cross-functional alignment, buy-in, and sponsorship, and by delivering exceptional skill-building and process-improvement strategies that ensure durable, long-term adoption

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
  • 7+ years of combined Deal Desk, sales operations, sales enablement, process improvement, change management, or consulting experience
  • Bachelor's degree

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of enablement experience
  • 3+ years of experience in Deal Desk, quote-to-cash, or sales operations
  • Exceptional executive communication skills with a demonstrated ability to influence executives without formal authority
  • Ability to navigate a complex, matrixed, and fast-paced organization, partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to roll out skill-building programs and process changes
  • Deep behavior/skill and process change management experience, ideally in a deal execution or quote-to-cash environment
  • Ability to perform robust data analysis, including identifying skill gaps and mapping process flows to quantify friction and improvement opportunities
  • Experience with adult learning and instructional design concepts and tools, with a demonstrated ability to build programs that drive skill development, process adoption, and business outcomes
  • Program/project management skills, with an ability to own and lead a skill-building or process-improvement program end to end
  • Resourcefulness in ambiguity - ability to self-solve when faced with challenges
  • Ability to deconstruct complex problems, root-cause the underlying skill and process drivers, and offer solutions rooted in business priorities
  • Command of an audience as demonstrated by facilitation and/or public speaking experience
  • Fluency in ML/AI tools, specifically CPQ/deal-desk software, Learning Management Systems, AI Sales Enablement software, project management software, and MS Excel and PowerPoint

Suggested Skills:
  • Enablement
  • Stakeholder management
  • Executive Comunication
  • Change Management
  • Data Analysis
