SUMMARY:
As an intern firefighter, he/she will have the opportunity to observe and assist in emergency medical care and fire responses. During training exercises, the intern will have more supervised hands on training to ensure they stay within their work scope.
This internship will last no longer than six months. Must be able to work three (3) days per week, eight (8) hours/day totaling 24 hours/week.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:
Assists and supports fire and emergency calls under the direction of the duty supervisor and/or incident commander including but not limited to; lay hoses, carry and set up ladders, and use fire equipment.
Conducts and administers first aid.
Observes and assists in pre-fire and fire prevention inspections.
Participates in drills and training activities.
Other responsibilities and duties as assigned.
SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS:
Currently enrolled in Fire Science classes or recently completed a fire academy.
Must have basic knowledge of Firefighting, theories and concepts in the field and their practical applications to problems and situations ordinarily encountered.
Current EMT and CPR certificate.
Perfer to have current CPAT or BIDDLE.
Must have the ability to provide solutions to routine technical problems.
Must have the ability to communicate effectively, in both oral and written applications, which successfully supports other firefighters, employees and management.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work occurs in both an outdoor shipyard environment and in an office setting. While performing the duties of this position, the employee must be able to work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces aboard vessels under construction/repair. Daily inspections require climbing ladders, working at heights, walking on scaffolding, observing use of tools and operation of equipment/machinery. Physical dexterity must allow for bending, reaching, climbing, crawling, and working on ladders and scaffolding. Must be physically able to walk to all yard locations. Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds of weight. Visual abilities required include close, distance and peripheral vision, depth perception and color recognition. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to dust, fumes, and smoke. Must be able to spend up to 70% of time in an outdoor shipyard environment in all climates. The noise level is usually moderate to extremely noisy 70% of the time, which may include sirens, horns, chipping, and hammering. Must be able to accomplish any task with Full PPE including but not limited to full turn outs, helmet and an SCBA.
ACCOUNTABILITY:
Ensures NASSCOs Injury and Illness Prevention Program meets company and regulatory requirements and is effectively implemented. Responsible for the effective and efficient operation of the Safety and Fire Departments and for administering NASSCOs Fire Management System.

Pay Scale: $37,400 - $56,800

This pay range is a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this role. It takes into account the wide range of factors considered in making compensation decisions; including but not limited to skill sets, experience, training, and education.
