Sales Engineer Trainee information

What is a sales engineer trainee?

Sales Engineer Trainees are entry-level professionals who learn to bridge the gap between technical products and customer needs. They receive training in both engineering principles and sales techniques to effectively assist clients in understanding and purchasing complex products or services. Their role typically involves shadowing experienced sales engineers, learning about the company's products, and gradually taking on more responsibility in both technical support and sales activities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales engineer trainee, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Engineer Trainee, you need a solid understanding of engineering principles, basic sales techniques, and typically a degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with CRM software, product demonstration tools, and technical presentation platforms is often required. Strong interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities, and a willingness to learn are important soft skills that set candidates apart. These skills enable a Sales Engineer Trainee to effectively bridge technical solutions with customer needs, driving successful sales outcomes and career growth.

What are some common challenges faced by sales engineer trainees during their first year, and how can they overcome them?

Sales Engineer Trainees often face the challenge of balancing technical learning with developing strong communication and sales skills. Navigating complex product knowledge while building relationships with clients can be overwhelming at first. To overcome these challenges, trainees should proactively seek mentorship, participate in product training sessions, and regularly collaborate with experienced sales engineers and technical teams. Embracing feedback and engaging in continuous learning will help build confidence and competence in both technical and client-facing aspects of the role.

Trainees are in training, whereas Sales Engineers have established skills and experience to handle complex sales processes.

How much does an entry level sales engineer make?

Entry-level sales engineers typically earn between $60,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on the industry and location. Starting salaries may include commissions or bonuses based on sales performance, and the role often requires technical knowledge and communication skills.

How to get into sales engineer trainee with no experience?

To become a sales engineer trainee with no experience, focus on developing technical knowledge relevant to the industry, such as understanding products and solutions, and improve communication skills. Gaining certifications like Cisco or CompTIA can enhance your qualifications, and internships or entry-level roles in sales or technical support can provide practical experience. Demonstrating a willingness to learn and a strong interest in technology is also important for entry into this role.

Job description

JUNIOR ELECTRICAL ESTIMATOR / ESTIMADOR ELÉCTRICO JUNIOR

Company: Division 16, LLC
Location: Caguas, Puerto Rico
Type: Full-time – On-site
Focus: ~95% Office / ~5% Occasional Field Work

Position Description

Division 16, LLC is seeking a Junior Electrical Estimator to join our Estimating and Preconstruction Department.

We are looking for a candidate with previous experience in the electrical construction industry or a closely related electrical field, with a working knowledge of electrical materials, equipment, systems, drawings, and construction processes, who is interested in developing a career in electrical estimating.

The ideal candidate may have experience in electrical estimating, electrical construction, electrical equipment or material sales, project coordination, procurement, field supervision, technical support, or other related electrical industry roles.

Previous direct estimating experience is preferred; however, candidates with a strong electrical background, analytical skills, and the ability to understand plans, materials, equipment, and project requirements will also be considered.

This position offers the opportunity to work directly with experienced estimators while progressively developing the skills necessary to prepare complete and competitive electrical estimates.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform and assist with electrical quantity takeoffs from construction drawings and specifications.
  • Review electrical plans, specifications, addenda, RFIs, and other bid documents.
  • Identify electrical materials, equipment, systems, and project scope requirements.
  • Assist in developing material, labor, equipment, and subcontractor costs.
  • Request, organize, and follow up on vendor and supplier quotations.
  • Prepare material lists, estimating worksheets, data summaries, and internal reports.
  • Assist in identifying scope gaps, exclusions, clarifications, and potential cost impacts.
  • Support the preparation of electrical proposals and bid packages.
  • Maintain organized electronic estimating files and technical documentation.
  • Coordinate with senior estimators, project managers, suppliers, subcontractors, and other team members.
  • Participate in bid reviews and estimate reconciliation.
  • Learn and develop proficiency with company estimating software, databases, and internal procedures.
  • Assist in evaluating different electrical systems and construction methods during the estimating process.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 1–3 years of relevant experience in the electrical industry, including one or more of the following:
  • Electrical estimating or preconstruction
  • Electrical construction
  • Electrical equipment or material sales
  • Electrical project coordination
  • Procurement or purchasing of electrical materials
  • Field supervision
  • Electrical technical support
  • Preparation of quotations or bids
  • Other closely related electrical construction or industry experience
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical construction drawings.
  • General understanding of electrical materials, equipment, and construction systems.
  • Basic to intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong numerical, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • High attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to organize and structure technical information clearly.
  • Effective communication skills in English and Spanish, written and verbal.
  • Ability to work in a deadline-driven environment and manage multiple bid-related tasks.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience performing electrical quantity takeoffs or construction estimates.
  • Technical degree, Associate Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or coursework in:
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Construction Management
  • Engineering
  • or another related technical field.
  • Experience with electrical estimating or digital takeoff software.
  • Familiarity with commercial, industrial, institutional, or infrastructure electrical construction.
  • Knowledge or familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC).
  • Previous field experience in electrical construction.
  • Experience obtaining or reviewing quotations from electrical suppliers or manufacturers.

Ideal Candidate

We are looking for someone who is early in their estimating career or transitioning into estimating from another electrical industry position, but who already understands the fundamentals of electrical construction, materials, equipment, or project documentation.

The candidate does not need to be a senior estimator or independently manage major bids from day one. However, the individual should have enough electrical industry knowledge to contribute to takeoffs, pricing, vendor coordination, scope review, and bid preparation while continuing to develop under experienced estimators.

This is not intended as a zero-experience trainee position. Candidates should have previous relevant experience within the electrical construction or electrical industry environment.
