What is a sales demonstration pilot?

Sales Demonstration Pilots are professional pilots who operate aircraft during demonstration flights to showcase an aircraft's features and capabilities to potential buyers or clients. They work closely with sales teams to highlight the performance, safety, and unique selling points of different aircraft models. These pilots must have extensive flight experience, excellent communication skills, and in-depth knowledge of the aircraft they are presenting. Their role is crucial in helping customers make informed purchasing decisions by providing hands-on demonstrations and answering technical questions.

How does a sales demonstration pilot typically collaborate with sales and product teams during the sales cycle?

A Sales Demonstration Pilot works closely with both sales and product teams to ensure that product demonstrations are tailored to each client's needs. They often participate in pre-sales meetings to understand customer requirements, coordinate with the sales team to align on objectives, and communicate with product managers to clarify technical details or customize demos. This collaborative approach ensures seamless presentations and maximizes the product's appeal to potential clients, often requiring pilots to adapt quickly and provide real-time feedback to both teams for ongoing improvement.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales demonstration pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Sales Demonstration Pilot, you need an active commercial pilot license, in-depth aircraft knowledge, and substantial flight experience, often with a background in sales or customer engagement. Familiarity with avionics systems, flight simulators, and customer relationship management (CRM) tools is typically required. Outstanding communication, adaptability, and presentation skills help you effectively convey product value and build client trust. These competencies are vital to ensure safe, engaging demonstrations that drive sales and foster long-term client relationships.

What is the difference between Sales Demonstration Pilot vs Sales Representative?

AspectSales Demonstration PilotSales Representative
CredentialsTypically requires product knowledge, technical skills, and sometimes certifications in sales or industry-specific trainingRequires sales training, communication skills, and often a basic understanding of products or services
Work EnvironmentOften involves demonstrations, presentations, and pilot programs with potential clientsEngages in client outreach, meetings, and closing sales across various settings
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in tech, manufacturing, and industries with complex products requiring pilot testingCommon across retail, B2B sales, and service industries

While both roles involve engaging with clients, a Sales Demonstration Pilot focuses on testing and showcasing products during pilot programs, whereas a Sales Representative handles ongoing sales activities and client relationships. The demonstration pilot is more technical and project-based, often requiring specialized knowledge, while the sales representative role emphasizes relationship-building and closing deals.

Job description

Sales Manager - HighSpeed Optical Transceivers (Hyperscaler Focus)

Location: Bay Area

Type: Full time

Compensation: Competitive base + performance bonus

Role summary

We're building a new highspeed optical transceiver business for AI data center hyperscalers. As Sales Manager, you'll run daytoday execution for a focused set of target accounts and opportunities, driving pipeline creation, stakeholder alignment, pilots, and early production commitments. You'll work closely with the Sales Director, Product Director, and Technical/Marketing teams to translate technical requirements into compelling commercial motion.

Key responsibilities

- Own a defined territory/account set and drive a consistent pipeline generation plan.

- Create and manage qualified opportunities from discovery through proposal and close (designwin/pilot pathways preferred).

- Coordinate hyperscaler technical engagement: align architecture, evaluation timelines, interoperability/test needs, and pilot success criteria.

- Partner with Product Marketing and Technical Marketing to develop account-specific messaging and ROI narratives.

- Build account plans and maintain strong executive/technical stakeholder relationships at target customers.

- Support pricing, packaging, and deal structuring; ensure commercial proposals align with margin and product readiness.

- Maintain accurate CRM hygiene and forecasting (opportunity stage management, pipeline coverage, close probability).

- Identify risks and remove blockers by coordinating crossfunctionally (Product, Engineering, Supply Chain/Ops, Finance).

- Participate in partner/system-integrator motions when relevant (OEM/ODM, SIs).

Qualifications (3-5 years)

- 3-5 years of quota-carrying B2B sales experience selling networking/hardware or related infrastructure products (optics/transceivers strongly preferred).

- Experience selling into data center / cloud / enterprise IT environments with multi-stakeholder buying processes.

- Demonstrated success building pipeline and closing opportunities (pilots, production commitments, or meaningful contracts).

- Ability to learn technical product content quickly and communicate value to both technical and business stakeholders.

- Strong written and verbal communication skills; comfortable presenting internally and with customer teams.

- Proficiency with CRM tools and disciplined forecasting habits.

- Minimum education: Bachelor's degree or equivalent in Engineering, Physics, Optics, Business, Communications, or a related field.

Preferred

- Experience with pluggable optics, CPO, Silicon Photonics, or adjacent data center networking hardware.

- Familiarity with technical evaluation cycles (interoperability testing, procurement timelines, qualification paths).

- Experience working closely with product and engineering teams to shape commercialization.

Success metrics (first 6-12 months)

- Maintain healthy pipeline coverage for assigned accounts (as defined by Sales Director).

- Secure initial pilots/evaluations with targeted hyperscaler accounts.

- Convert a meaningful share of qualified opportunities to proposals and closes as products ramp.

- Demonstrate reliable forecasting accuracy and improved funnel health over time.

Organizational context & interactions

- Reports to: Chief Marketing Officer.

- Close partners: Product Director, Product Marketing/Technical Marketing, Solution/System/Applications Engineering, Supply Chain/Ops, Finance, and external partners where needed.
