What is a sales deal desk?

A Sales Deal Desk is a specialized team or function within a company that supports the sales organization by reviewing, structuring, and approving complex deals. They help ensure that deals are profitable, compliant with company policies, and meet customer needs. The Deal Desk often collaborates with sales, finance, legal, and operations teams to streamline the sales process, optimize pricing, and reduce sales cycle times. Their main goal is to enable sales teams to close deals more efficiently while minimizing risk to the company.

How does the sales deal desk collaborate with sales teams to structure complex deals?

The Sales Deal Desk works closely with account executives and sales managers to review, structure, and approve complex or non-standard deals. This often involves coordinating with legal, finance, and pricing teams to ensure that proposed deal terms comply with company policies and optimize profitability. Team members provide guidance on contract terms, pricing strategies, and risk mitigation, helping sales teams navigate approval processes efficiently. Collaboration is typically fast-paced and requires strong communication skills, as the Deal Desk acts as both a resource and a checkpoint to facilitate smooth deal closures.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales deal desk professional?

To thrive as a Sales Deal Desk professional, you need strong analytical skills, deep understanding of sales processes, and experience with pricing strategies, supported by a bachelor’s degree in business or a related field. Proficiency in CRM systems (like Salesforce), CPQ (Configure, Price, Quote) tools, and advanced Excel skills is typically required. Exceptional attention to detail, effective communication, and the ability to collaborate across departments are vital soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure accurate deal structuring, streamlined sales operations, and maximized revenue opportunities.

What is the difference between Sales Deal Desk vs Sales Operations Specialist?

While both roles support sales functions, the Sales Deal Desk primarily focuses on deal approval, pricing, and contract negotiations, ensuring deals align with company policies. In contrast, the Sales Operations Specialist handles broader sales support activities, including data management and process improvements. Understanding these differences helps organizations assign the right responsibilities and candidates for each role.

Job description

About the Role
As Deal Desk Lead, you will be a founding member of our GTM Strategy & Operations team where you will own the buildout of our deal operations and deal desk functions from the ground up.
You will own all systems, workflows, and day-to-day operations for quoting, pricing, deal terms approvals, custom deal structures, and deal bookings. You will work closely with Sales, Partnerships, Finance, and Legal stakeholders to make sure that the process of structuring, configuring, approving, and booking deals is frictionless and optimized for deal velocity and value maximization.
This is a hands-on individual contributor role that has potential to evolve into a people manager role as our GTM scales. This role reports to the Head of GTM Strategy & Operations. This is an in-office role based in our San Francisco headquarters.
What you will do and achieve
  • Design, manage, and consistently improve all quote-to-booking processes and tooling.
  • Be the primary business and technical owner for the Salesforce Revenue Cloud CPQ instance.
  • Own the integrity of all bookings data in CRM/CPQ (Opportunities, Opportunity Products, Quotes, Quote Lines, Assets, Subscriptions, etc.).
  • Review deals for booking readiness, resolve discrepancies, and ensure approved commercial terms are accurately reflected across CRM and CPQ.
  • Partner with Sales Leadership, Finance, and Legal to establish clear frameworks for pricing, deal terms review, approvals, and contract review.
  • Guide the Sales team toward deal structures that increase velocity and maximize value.
  • Find novel ways to use Factory droids to streamline quote-to-booking processes.
Qualifications
  • 5+ years of experience in Deal Desk, Revenue Operations, Sales Operations, or a related function.
  • Strong hands-on experience administering Salesforce Revenue Cloud or a comparable CPQ platform.
  • Deep understanding of quote-to-booking processes, including quoting, pricing, approvals, contracting, and booking.
  • Strong understanding of SaaS pricing, discounting, commercial terms, and contract structures.
  • Experience supporting complex and non-standard deals in an enterprise SaaS environment.
  • A technical mindset and the ability to build, troubleshoot, and improve systems, workflows, automations, and integrations.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and a willingness to work directly at the record level to identify and resolve discrepancies.
  • Experience working cross-functionally with Sales, Finance, Legal, Data, and Operations.
  • Experience designing systems and processes for a rapidly growing company.
  • Strong AI fluency and a practical instinct for using AI to increase leverage.

This is an in-office position (5 days/week) in San Francisco (walking distance to Caltrain)
