What is a sales and purchasing professional?

Sales and Purchasing jobs involve managing the buying and selling of products or services for a company. Sales roles focus on identifying potential customers, building relationships, and closing deals to generate revenue. Purchasing professionals, on the other hand, are responsible for sourcing suppliers, negotiating prices, and ensuring that the organization acquires quality goods or services at the best possible cost. Both roles require strong communication, negotiation, and analytical skills, as they play a crucial part in a company's supply chain and overall profitability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a sales and purchasing professional?

To thrive as a Sales and Purchasing professional, you need a solid understanding of sales strategies, negotiation techniques, and supply chain management, often supported by a relevant degree or experience in business or logistics. Familiarity with ERP systems, inventory management software, and procurement platforms is typically required. Strong interpersonal skills, problem-solving ability, and attention to detail help build relationships with vendors and clients and manage contracts effectively. These skills and qualities are vital to optimize costs, ensure timely procurement, and drive business growth.

How do sales and purchasing professionals typically balance the needs of internal stakeholders with those of external suppliers and clients?

Sales and Purchasing professionals often act as a bridge between internal teams and external partners. They must carefully balance internal requirements, such as budget constraints or production timelines, with the capabilities and expectations of suppliers and clients. This requires strong communication skills, negotiation abilities, and an understanding of both market trends and company objectives. Success in the role often depends on building trusting relationships, anticipating challenges, and finding win-win solutions that align with organizational goals.

Brand Development & Product Marketing Manager

Full-Time | Exempt

About Quality Choice | CDMA

Quality Choice | CDMA is a privately held wholesaler headquartered in Novi, Michigan, offering more than 1,000 private-label over-the-counter health, beauty, and wellness products under our trademarked Quality Choice brand.

For 100 years, we've partnered with independent retailers, distributors, and regional chains to provide high-quality private-label products that compete with national brands. Our success is built on trusted relationships, innovative products, and helping our customers grow their businesses.

Why This Role Matters

The Brand Development & Product Marketing Manager plays a key role in growing the Quality Choice brand by developing products, strengthening customer partnerships, supporting Sales, and bringing new ideas to market.

This position is responsible for driving product portfolio growth through strategic brand development, merchandising, product positioning, commercialization, and customer marketing initiatives.

You'll partner closely with Sales, Purchasing, suppliers, and Executive Leadership to identify new product opportunities, develop retailer programs, launch products, and create marketing strategies that help our customers succeed.

This is not a traditional marketing position. It's a commercial leadership role focused on helping products, and the customers who sell them grow.

What You'll Do

Brand Development, Product Strategy & Portfolio Growth

  • Lead the growth of the Quality Choice product portfolio by developing strategies that increase distribution, strengthen product positioning, support retail merchandising, and drive profitable sales growth.
  • Develop and execute brand, pricing, merchandising, promotional, and go-to-market strategies that increase market share and customer engagement.
  • Manage the product portfolio through lifecycle management, commercialization, assortment planning, and new product development.
  • Analyze category performance, consumer trends, customer insights, and competitive activity to identify growth opportunities and improve product profitability.
  • Partner with Sales, Purchasing, and suppliers to develop commercialization strategies, support product launches, and expand the Quality Choice portfolio.

Customer Marketing & Sales Support

  • Develop customer-facing marketing programs, merchandising initiatives, promotions, and sales tools that help retailers and distributors grow Quality Choice sales.
  • Support trade shows, customer presentations, supplier marketing initiatives, and other programs that strengthen customer relationships and brand visibility.

Marketing & Digital Strategy

  • Ensure consistent brand messaging and product presentation across all marketing channels.
  • Oversee website content, product information, digital marketing, social media, and eCommerce initiatives.
  • Measure campaign effectiveness and use data-driven insights to improve future marketing performance.

Leadership

  • Lead and develop the Marketing team, including direct supervision of the Graphic Designer.
  • Collaborate with Sales, Purchasing, Customer Service, Operations, and Executive Leadership to support company objectives.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, innovation, and continuous improvement.

What We're Looking For

Required Experience

  • 5-7 years of experience managing consumer products, private label brands, or product portfolios.
  • Bachelor’s degree in marketing, business, or related field.
  • Experience within Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG), OTC healthcare, retail, wholesale distribution, manufacturing, grocery, pharmacy, or private label environments.
  • Experience collaborating with Sales teams to develop customer programs that drive revenue growth.
  • Experience supporting product launches, commercialization, and go-to-market strategies.
  • Experience analyzing category performance, pricing, competitive activity, and market trends.
  • Experience working with suppliers and cross-functional teams.
  • Leadership or supervisory experience preferred.

Preferred Experience

  • Candidates with experience in one or more of the following areas are strongly encouraged to apply:
  • Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG)
  • Private Label Products
  • OTC Healthcare
  • Retail Merchandising
  • Category Management
  • Product Portfolio Management
  • Product Commercialization
  • Shopper Marketing
  • Trade Marketing
  • Distributor Marketing
  • Wholesale Distribution
  • Consumer Products
  • Brand Development
  • Product Marketing
  • Product Lifecycle Management

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong understanding of brand development, product positioning, merchandising, pricing strategy, and category growth.
  • Demonstrated ability to translate market insights into profitable business opportunities.
  • Strong project management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and Microsoft Office, including Excel.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to build relationships across departments, suppliers, and customers.
  • Passion for growing brands, launching products, and supporting customer success.
