Job description

Account Manager - Instrumentation/Automation (North Dakota)

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Outside Sales & Territory Growth

  • Lead the full sales cycle including prospecting, solution development, proposal creation, and closing.

  • Conduct regular in-person customer visits across the assigned territory (MT, ND, and NW MN); maintain a strong field presence.

  • Promote the client’s full portfolio of automation, controls, and instrumentation products.

  • Partner with factory representatives during regional visits to strengthen customer engagement.

  • Expand customer accounts by educating clients on value-added services and technical capabilities.

  • Identify new revenue streams, emerging opportunities, and strategic growth areas within accounts.

Technical Sales & Solution Delivery

  • Provide technical guidance on instrumentation, filtration, automation, and process equipment.

  • Negotiate pricing and terms with customers and suppliers to deliver profitable, high-value solutions.

  • Collaborate with OEM partners to enhance product offerings and solution competitiveness.

  • Work cross-functionally with internal teams to ensure seamless delivery and customer satisfaction.

Customer Communication & Relationship Management

  • Set clear expectations and follow through on commitments with customers and vendors.

  • Maintain accurate CRM records, contacts, and activity logs.

  • Respond quickly and professionally to customer concerns, technical questions, and service needs.

  • Build strong, proactive relationships with manufacturers, distributors, and industry partners.

Training & Team Collaboration

  • Participate in internal sales meetings, product training, and professional development sessions.

  • Share best practices and assist in onboarding new team members.

Requirements

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, a technical discipline, or equivalent experience in instrumentation and control.

  • 5+ years of outside B2B industrial sales in sectors such as oil & gas, chemical, refining, power generation, or wastewater.

  • 5+ years selling industrial instrumentation (Temperature, Pressure, Analytical, Level, Flow) and/or automation or process equipment.

  • 3+ years managing strategic, multi-site customer accounts.

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong consultative selling skills and technical proposal development.

  • Proven success landing new accounts and expanding territory market share.

  • Ability to build relationships at the executive and plant-level.

  • Excellent communication, organization, and time-management skills.

  • Highly motivated, self-starter with a solutions-oriented mindset.

  • Proficient in CRM usage and territory planning.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Frequent computer and phone use; extended driving for customer visits.

  • Occasional lifting of demo equipment (up to 50 lbs).

  • Ability to walk industrial plants, refineries, and outdoor facilities.

  • Exposure to varying temperatures during site visits.
