Fire Captain

General Description

Supervisory and administrative work in supervising the fire suppression, prevention, and rescue activities of the fire station under the direction of the Fire Chief. Supervises personnel involved in fire suppression, inspection, and prevention activities of a station. The incumbent is responsible for personnel, operations, and equipment and facilities maintenance. Accountable to and works under the direction of the Fire Chief.

Essential Job Functions

  • Develops training schedules for the career and reserve firefighters.
  • Records and regulates departmental and individual training hours.
  • Addresses civic clubs and other groups regarding the activities and programs of the fire department.
  • Serves as commanding officer of the departmental shift with the responsibility of assignments, maintaining discipline, and morale of the on-duty personnel.
  • Responds to fire alarms and other emergencies.
  • Directs firefighters and rescue operations utilizing the Incident Command System/Incident Management System (ICS/IMS) until relieved by a superior officer.
  • Performs inspections of fire station, equipment, apparatus, records and personnel.
  • Maintains department procedures, rules and regulations of policies.
  • Supervises the preparation and maintenance of shift records, prepares reports and handles other administrative details.
  • Recommends appropriate disciplinary action
  • Supervises clean up operations.
  • Attends advanced fire/rescue and administration classes.
  • Administers first aid to injured persons.
  • Performs other related duties as directed or required by the Fire Chief.

Minimum Qualifications Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of modern fire department administration.
  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, procedures, equipment and apparatus used in modern fire fighting and in the protection of life and property from fire.
  • Knowledge of the policies and rules of the City and the department.
  • Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely, orally and in writing to groups and individuals.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with civic and official groups and the general public, as well as to command and hold the respect and discipline of subordinates.

Education and Experience

High school graduation or possession of equivalency diploma and 5 years experience in fire prevention. (A comparable amount of education, training or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.)

Licenses, Certification or Registration

  • State of Florida Certified Fire Fighter
  • State of Florida Certified Emergency Medical Technician
  • State of Florida Certified Fire Officer I
  • Valid Florida Driver's License

Essential Physical Skills

  • Acceptable eyesight (with or without corrective lenses)
  • Acceptable hearing (with or without a hearing aid)
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing
  • Ability to lift heavy objects.
