Job description

The Healthcare Environmental and Safety Professional ensure compliance, manage risks, and protect staff and patients from injuries and environmental hazards with medical settings. They oversee waste management, safety training, and regulatory compliance. (OSHA, Joint Commission, EPA, MASSDEP).
Under the direction of the Safety Manger, performs environmental management and safety services for Safety program at Baystate Health entities throughout the region. Adheres to corporate and department compliance policies, and any all-applicable laws and regulations. The incumbent plans and implement methods to address potential environmental and safety issues consistent with the needs and goals of Baystate Health.
Job Responsibilities:
  • Hazardous Materials Management: Handling biological, chemical and radioactive waste along with spill response.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensuring compliance with regulatory bodies like OSHA, EPA, Joint Commission, and local mandates to avoid fines.
  • Risk Management: Leading safety audits, inspections, accident investigations, and emergency trade emergency response planning.
  • Training and Education: Developing and delivering occupational health and safety training for healthcare staff.
  • Coordinate environmental issues at Baystate Health, including but not limited to the waste management program, including shipments, storage inspections, and recordkeeping; annual hazardous waste generator reports; Tier II forms, air/wastewater/recycling permits, and compliance documentation.
  • Participate in accident investigations, life safety/hazard surveillance, construction safety and design review, personal protective equipment assessments.
  • Perform safety and environmental rounds, work with Department managers to resolve issues, enter work orders, and educate staff.
  • Perform audit for emergency eyewash compliance, testing, and inspections.
  • Serve as member of the Baystate Medical Center Safety and Environmental Care Committee and other related committees as needed.
  • Research new equipment, training materials and facility upgrades as requested.
  • Function in a consulting role to other BH entities as needed; and supervise contract staff.

Requirements Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in environmental service, occupational health, engineering, or related field.
  • Experience in healthcare operations, infection control or chemical industrial hygiene is essential.
  • 3-5 years' experience in environmental management and safety preferably in a complex, multiple facility, diverse organization.
  • Valid driving license-must be willing to travel among Baystate Health entities.

Recommended Certifications
  • CHESP: Certified Health Care Environmental Services Professional. Focuses on operations and infection prevention.
  • CHSP: Certified Health Care Safety Professional focuses on safety, security, and risk.
  • CSP/CIH: Certified Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist
