What is a safety manager?

Safety Managers are professionals responsible for developing, implementing, and overseeing safety policies and procedures within an organization to ensure a safe working environment. They conduct risk assessments, train employees on safety protocols, and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. Safety Managers also investigate accidents or incidents to determine their causes and recommend preventive measures. Their ultimate goal is to minimize workplace hazards and promote a culture of safety.

What does a safety manager do?

Safety managers do a lot of planning to ensure that the safety program of their workplace is developed and followed. In addition to training all supervising employees on the proper safety procedures and hazard preventions set in place, safety managers investigate and study past incidents in order to improve employee safety. They create manuals, report incidents, and document changes. They also perform inspections on equipment and observe the workplace to ensure all rules are followed.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a safety manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Safety Manager, you need expertise in occupational health and safety regulations, risk assessment, and incident investigation, usually supported by a bachelor's degree in safety, engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with OSHA standards, safety management systems (like ISO 45001), and certifications such as CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or ASP (Associate Safety Professional) are typically required. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills help foster a safety culture and ensure compliance across teams. These skills are crucial for minimizing workplace hazards, reducing incidents, and maintaining regulatory compliance.

How does a safety manager typically collaborate with other departments to promote workplace safety?

Safety Managers work closely with various departments, such as operations, human resources, and maintenance, to identify potential hazards and implement safety protocols. They often lead safety training sessions, coordinate emergency response drills, and consult with department heads to ensure compliance with regulations. Building strong relationships and maintaining open communication channels with different teams is essential for fostering a culture of safety throughout the organization.

What is the difference between Safety Manager vs Safety Coordinator?

Safety Managers focus on developing and leading safety programs, managing teams, and ensuring compliance at a strategic level. Safety Coordinators support these efforts through inspections, training, and day-to-day safety tasks. Both roles require safety certifications and are vital in maintaining workplace safety, but Safety Managers typically hold more responsibility and oversight.

How hard is it to be a safety manager?

Being a safety manager requires strong knowledge of safety regulations, risk assessment skills, and the ability to implement safety programs. It often involves managing compliance, conducting training, and responding to safety incidents, which can be demanding but manageable with relevant certifications and experience.

How much does a safety manager make per hour?

A safety manager typically earns between $25 and $50 per hour, depending on experience, industry, and location. Those with certifications like CSP or OSHA training may command higher wages, especially in construction or manufacturing environments.

What degree do I need to be a safety manager?

A safety manager typically needs a bachelor's degree in occupational health and safety, environmental science, engineering, or a related field. Relevant certifications such as the Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Occupational Health and Safety Technician (OHST) can enhance job prospects. Experience in safety procedures and knowledge of OSHA regulations are also important.

Description
Store Manager

Build a Strong Team. Serve the Community. Lead with Purpose.

At Hennick's, what we do is about more than building materials.

A stack of lumber becomes a family’s first home. A load of fencing protects a ranch that has been in the family for generations. A handful of boards becomes a treehouse where lifelong memories are made.

These are not simply projects—they are moments that matter.

We are seeking an experienced, community-minded Store Manager to lead our Lakeside location. This is an opportunity for someone who takes ownership, develops people, understands the business, and wants to make a meaningful difference for customers, employees, and the community.

Job Purpose

The Store Manager is responsible for the overall leadership and daily operation of the Lakeside store. This position leads the store team, delivers an exceptional customer experience, drives sales and profitability, manages inventory and expenses, and ensures the store operates safely and consistently with Company standards.

The Store Manager is expected to think like an owner—identifying opportunities, solving problems, developing talent, and making responsible decisions that support the long-term success of the store and Gold Beach Lumber.

What You’ll DoLead and Develop the Team
  • Recruit, onboard, train, coach, and retain a motivated, high-performing store team.
  • Establish clear expectations and hold employees accountable with fairness and consistency.
  • Conduct meaningful performance conversations and help employees develop their skills and careers.
  • Build a positive workplace where employees feel respected, supported, and connected to the store’s success.
  • Identify and develop future leaders through coaching, cross-training, and increased responsibility.
Drive Sales and Profitability
  • Develop and execute strategies that increase sales, strengthen customer relationships, and improve store profitability.
  • Understand the Lakeside market and identify opportunities to better serve contractors, homeowners, and community partners.
  • Monitor sales results, margins, labor, operating expenses, and other key performance indicators.
  • Prepare and manage the store budget while using Company resources responsibly.
  • Create action plans based on sales data, customer needs, and market trends.
Deliver the Hennick's Customer Experience
  • Build lasting relationships with customers by understanding their projects, anticipating their needs, and providing knowledgeable support.
  • Set a visible example of friendly, responsive, and solutions-focused service.
  • Address customer questions and concerns promptly, fairly, and professionally.
  • Ensure the store is clean, organized, well-merchandised, and easy for customers to shop.
  • Help the team understand that every customer interaction is an opportunity to build trust.
Manage Store Operations
  • Oversee daily store operations, including staffing, scheduling, merchandising, inventory, receiving, facility standards, and customer service.
  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate with purchasing and suppliers to maintain product availability while reducing shortages and excess inventory.
  • Protect Company assets and ensure established operational and financial controls are followed.
  • Partner with the Support Office and other store leaders to implement Company programs and share effective practices.
  • Balance local decision-making with Company-wide standards, priorities, and goals.
Lead a Culture of Safety
  • Maintain a safe environment for employees, customers, and vendors.
  • Ensure compliance with Company safety policies and applicable health and safety requirements.
  • Conduct safety conversations, correct hazards promptly, and reinforce safe work practices.
  • Lead by example, demonstrating that safety is a daily responsibility and never a shortcut.
How We Lead: Our Core Values

Our core values are not words on a wall—they are how we show up every day.

Integrity — Do the right thing and own the outcome.
You make fair decisions, follow through on commitments, address issues directly, and take responsibility for results.

Community — Take care of customers, coworkers, and the communities we serve.
You understand that the store is part of Lakeside. You build relationships, support local needs, and look for ways the team can make a positive difference.

Engagement — Bring energy, participate, and help make us better.
You communicate openly, invite ideas, recognize contributions, and create an environment where employees take pride in their work.

Experience — Create an experience people want to return to.
You set high standards for service, store appearance, product knowledge, teamwork, and follow-through.

What We’re Looking For
  • Leadership or management experience in retail, lumber and building materials, hardware, construction supply, or a related environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and hold a team accountable.
  • Strong business judgment and an understanding of sales, margins, inventory, labor, expenses, and profitability.
  • A customer-first mindset and the ability to build long-term community relationships.
  • Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills.
  • The ability to analyze performance information and turn it into practical action.
  • A hands-on leadership style and willingness to remain visible and engaged in daily store operations.
  • A consistent commitment to workplace safety.
  • Alignment with Gold Beach Lumber’s values and a genuine desire to develop people and serve the Lakeside community.
The Leader Who Will Thrive Here

You will be successful in this role if you are the kind of leader who:

  • Takes ownership instead of waiting for someone else to solve the problem.
  • Builds trust through consistency, honesty, and follow-through.
  • Understands that strong results and a strong culture go hand in hand.
  • Enjoys developing employees and helping others succeed.
  • Knows the customers, the community, and the business.
  • Can honor what has made Gold Beach Lumber successful while helping us build what comes next.

For generations, Gold Beach Lumber has been a trusted partner in the communities we serve. If you want to lead a team, grow a business, and help your community build something meaningful, we would like to hear from you.
