Job description

Job Title: Embedded Software Engineer (C/C++) Location: Huntsville, AL (Onsite) Type: Contract-to-hire Compensation: $77-80/HR Clearance: Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain Experience: 4+ years (or 2+ with a Master’s)

About the role

We’re hiring an Embedded Software Engineer to help build and improve mission-critical embedded software/firmware for defense/aerospace, safety-critical systems. You’ll work onsite with an engineering team to design, code, test, integrate, and debug real-time embedded software.

What you’ll do

  • Design and develop embedded software (architecture + hands-on coding in C/C++)
  • Write unit tests, participate in peer reviews, and support software quality best practices
  • Integrate software modules within subsystems and support broader system integration
  • Build tools/test harnesses to help with testing, integration, and maintenance
  • Troubleshoot and debug software issues using common embedded debugging tools
  • Work in modern engineering workflows (Agile, DevOps, CI/CD, test automation)
  • Collaborate closely with teammates and communicate progress clearly
  • (Mid-level+) Mentor junior engineers and suggest improvements to tools/workflows

Must-have qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field (CS, CE, EE, Software Engineering, Math, etc.)
  • 4+ years relevant experience (or 2+ years with a related Master’s)
  • Strong C/C++ embedded development experience
  • Real-time OS experience (e.g., VxWorks, Integrity, FreeRTOS)
  • Experience with embedded processors/microcontrollers (e.g., ARM Cortex, RISC-V)
  • Experience with embedded debugging tools (e.g., JTAG, oscilloscopes)
  • Ability to work onsite in Huntsville/North Alabama (or relocate)
  • Active Secret clearance or ability to obtain one

Nice-to-have

  • Defense/aerospace or other safety-critical embedded experience
  • High-speed guided weapons, flight controls, or high-determinism systems exposure
  • Docker/Kubernetes familiarity
  • Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) familiarity
