Job description

The Safety Coordinator is responsible for ensuring a safe and compliant work environment at a U.S. Army contractor site focused on equipment turn-in, retrograde, and property disposal operations. This role ensures adherence to OSHA, DoD, and Army safety standards and actively promotes a culture of safety among all site personnel and subcontractors. Responsibilities Site Safety Oversight * Implement and enforce the site-specific Safety Plan in accordance with OSHA, EM 385-1-1, and Army regulations.
* Conduct regular site inspections to identify potential hazards related to material handling, equipment movement, and personnel operations during equipment turn-in.
* Ensure proper handling and storage of hazardous materials (HAZMAT) in compliance with EPA and Army guidelines.
Training & Compliance * Conduct safety orientations and recurring training for all personnel, including subcontractors and temporary labor.
* Ensure employees are trained on proper PPE usage, forklift and equipment operation, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), and incident reporting procedures.
* Maintain safety training records and certifications in accordance with contractual and regulatory requirements. Incident Management * Lead investigations of accidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
* Report findings and corrective actions to the Project Manager and Contracting Officer's Representative (COR), as required.
* Maintain incident logs and OSHA reporting documentation.
Safety Audits & Reporting * Perform routine safety audits and job hazard analyses (JHAs) for all key operations, including equipment offload, inspection, and turn-in staging.
* Track safety KPIs and prepare regular reports for internal leadership and government oversight.
* Support government inspections and respond to safety-related inquiries or non-compliance findings. Risk Mitigation * Develop and implement hazard control measures specific to heavy equipment, material handling, and military logistics operations.
* Monitor environmental conditions and enforce heat stress, cold weather, or severe weather protocols as required by site conditions.
Physical Requirements & Work Environment * Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform routine standing, walking, bending, and reaching tasks in warehouse and field environments. Must also meet all physical requirements necessary to perform assigned duties, including working in extreme heat or cold, high, or low humidity, blowing sand and dust, confined spaces, heights, and other inclement weather conditions. This position involves working both indoors and outdoors, periodic overtime, and exposure to heat, dust, cold, and adverse weather conditions.
* Employees may be required to perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications * High school diploma or equivalent is preferred; however, equivalent relevant work experience may be substituted; Associate or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Environmental Science, or related field preferred.
* 3+ years of safety experience on government, military, or industrial logistics sites.
* Working knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910, EM 385-1-1, DA PAM 385-10, and Army site safety practices.
* Experience supporting military logistics, equipment turn-in, retrograde, or base closure operations is highly preferred.
* Excellent communication, documentation, and conflict-resolution skills.
* Must have a REAL ID. * Must have a valid driver's license with proof of vehicle insurance.
* Must be able to obtain and maintain a Common Access Card (CAC).
* Must receive a favorable background check and drug testing results. * Basic proficiency in the English language (reading and writing). * Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook). * Must be able to obtain Tier1/ NACI (Public trust) background eligibility. Preferred Qualifications: * Certifications: OSHA 30-Hour (General Industry or Construction) required; CSP, CHST, or similar preferred.
* Forklift and HAZMAT handling certification a plus.
* Familiarity with Army safety systems, procedures, and reporting (e.g., mishap reporting to the COR).
* Former military or DoD contractor experience strongly preferred.
